News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

In Cooking this week Grade 5/6 made Purple Potato and Sage soup, Pumpkin and Tomato soup and Spring Onion Pancakes.

From the garden we used, purple potatoes and pumpkin harvested a few weeks ago and sage and chives.

We also used the tomato passata the 4/5 Class made.

Scott’s group cut the pumpkin and onions into small pieces and cooked them until they were soft.  They mixed the chicken stock and added the Tomato Passata that was made from a variety of tomatoes harvested during this term.  Patrick, Levi and Tahj worked well together to stir the soup as it cooked and checked to make sure the pumpkin was soft before it was blitzed with the hand blender.

Lee-Anne’s group worked well together to blend the cooked and cooled purple potatoes.  Chloe, Liv and Elsie’s group washed the leeks and chopped them finely.  They then worked with Lee-Anne to mix the chicken stock and add the cooked purple potato and leek mixture.  They noticed that the mixture had a very earthy potato smell but the taste was very different and delicious.  The cooked soup had  a very interesting and unusual purple colour.

Chris’s group worked in pairs to make 4 portions of dough for the Spring Onion Pancakes.  They kneaded the dough until it was warm and very soft.  While the dough rested they washed the Spring Onions and chopped them finely.

After recess while the soup was cooking everyone worked in pairs to follow the steps to make the Spring Onion pancakes.  Everyone did a great job to follow the steps to roll out the dough, add the oil and roll the dough into a snail shape to add the layers to make their pancakes light and flaky.

Anais, Chloe, Sophia and their team cooked the Spring Onion pancakes while the other teams, cleaned up, set the table and finished off the soups ready to serve. Lizzy and her group picked the flowers to decorate the table.

Everyone tried the two soups and loved the Spring Onion Pancakes. Well done 5/6 on a great cooking session and thanks Scott and Lee-Anne.
