Running Club

Running Club

Would you like your child to participate in St Columba’s Running Club on Friday mornings?  This is a parent-led initiative designed to introduce and advance running abilities and general fitness, in a fun environment.

  • Running Club is not a mandatory school activity and is coordinated by a group of volunteer parents. No teachers accompany the group.

  • The course we usually run is along Normanby Rd to Beach Rd. We cross at the traffic lights to Elwood beach then run along the footpath up to Point Ormond and back to school. Occasionally we may alter the course to cross Beach Rd at the end of Glen Huntly Rd.

When?

FRIDAY 7.40am – drop off is the school playground.

Child to check in with running coordinator upon arrival and have his /her name marked off the class list.

We leave the playground at 7.50am sharp and no latecomers can be accommodated unless a parent helper is still at the school.

If cancelled (e.g. bad weather) a message will be posted on to the Running Club group by 7.15am – it is your responsibility to join this group.

Requirements?

Child must have a commitment to participate, be in good health to run, and keen to work on his/her fitness.

Prep children must be accompanied by a parent every week – there are not enough parent helpers to stay behind to assist an individual child.

As this is not a mandatory school activity, children who are unwell, injured or disinterested in running should not attend. We work with a parent : child ratio of 1:10 and this does not allow for significant individual attention.

The children are encouraged to run or jog – walking is not encouraged as this defeats the purpose for the child and often means that a parent helper has to stay behind and supervise

If your child suffers from a condition, eg. Asthma, it is your parental responsibility to ensure he / she can manage the condition, or you will need to run with your child and ensure you have the appropriate medication (Ventolin) available. Parent volunteers are generally not medically trained however we carry a 1st aid kit with us to attend any minor injuries.

Parents are very welcome to run with their child any Friday to gain an understanding of how the club works.

Cost?  $10 per child per term. This contributes to a healthy snack which is provided to the children once they return to the school grounds.

How Can You Help?

We rely on parent helpers! If you cannot commit to helping every Friday in the term, it would be great if you could come when you can.

The kids love to have their parents cheer them on. You do not need to have any running ability. There are plenty of other jobs you can assist with such as manning the traffic lights and the bike path crossing & preparing food prior to children returning from running.         (we need a minimum of 6 parents to cover these roles).

Talk to the coordinator when you arrive and your help will be greatly appreciated. We depend on some occasional helpers as well as the regulars.

Coordinator contact details will be available in the newsletter.

Children will be supervised according to the rules and regulations stated by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria, ‘Child Safety’. Running Club will be run with a ratio of 1 adult for every 10 children.
