On Monday 20th November it was World Children’s Day.

The theme for 2023 was "for every child, every right."

According to the United Nations, World Children’s Day is UNICEF’s annual day of action for children, by children. From climate change, education and mental health, to ending racism and discrimination, children and young people are raising their voices on the issues that matter to their generation and calling for adults to create a better future. This World Children’s Day, it’s more important than ever that the world listens to their ideas and demands. On 20 November, kids are speaking out and reimagining a better future.

In Year 1 and Year 2, we celebrated World Children’s Day by handing over the power to them. They made the big decisions about our day considering; What was on the schedule for the day? When did we do each activity? What was the learning intention? What did we need for our learning? When did we rest? When did we schedule in play?

We voted on everything and came to a consensus. The schedule was a great mix of learning, play and rest. Interestingly they wanted to begin with meditation before venturing into the library for Daily 5. We flowed through to investigations and Mathematics (games of course) in the middle. We played outdoor games to get the body moving. Then. we flipped the day and ended with Sweet Spot, getting creative and social.

Handing things over encouraged voice, choice, agency and (we hope) play. We know that every child, everywhere, has rights, and we wanted to particularly highlight the right to play

We had a wonderfully inspiring time celebrating World Children’s Day at school.
