Updates around the college

Marina Walsh- Acting College Principal

Dear families and community members,

We have a great deal to share with you in this issue of Channels and I am excited to be the one to share it with you.

Remembrance Day Service

On Friday 10 November, our college leaders conducted the Remembrance Day Service with all our Prep – Year 11 students and staff present.  It was great to see our 2024 College Captains take on their first official duties, and work with our current Year 6 Captains, to commemorate such a significant day in our history.

We observed one minute's silence to remember those who have died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.  I wish to express my gratitude to the Kyabram families who had relatives who have served for our country and those who still service to allow the freedom we experience today.

Exams at the Senior School

Our Year 12 students have held their exams in the new library space to enable their every success.  From all reports, this space has been a great selection to allow our students to focus on exams and concentrate on performing at their best.  We also have had some students complete their final Applied Learning Work Placements this week.

The Year 12 Final Assembly was fabulous.  It was great to see the students speak and perform.  A very entertaining assembly!  We wish every Year 12 student all the best with their futures, and we look forward to seeing them visit again soon.

The Year 10 and 11 students had their exams this week.  The Year 11 students had their exams run over four days (Tuesday – Friday) whilst the Year 10 students had their Mathematics exam on Thursday and English exam on Friday.  Exams at these year levels are a great opportunity for students to learn how to prepare for exams and build their stamina to complete the exams which can be quite difficult.  Thank you to the Year 10 and 11 students for giving it their best this week.

Kyabram P-12 College Kinder 2024!

It is official.  Whilst the finishing touches are being made to the kindergarten, it was announced last week by the State Minister for Children that Shine Bright will be the new providers for the Kyabram P-12 College Kindergarten here on our school grounds.  For information on how to enrol your child at the kindergarten, please read the attached pdf below.

Classes for 2024

I am excited to let our families know that much work has already taken place to prepare our classes for 2024.  Classes are being finalised across Prep – Year 12.  Each year, we explore various options and combinations of students at each year level to set them up for success.  In the primary year levels, our teams of teachers will be going with straight Prep classes and will introduce composite classes at Years 1 and 2.  We will continue to run composite classes for Years 3 and 4, and for Years 5 and 6 students.

Final adjustments to classes at Years 7 – 12 will see some movement of students in core classes as they move into their new year levels.  Contact with families will take place in coming weeks.

As for our 2024 Year 7 students, there will be family meetings conducted in late November and early December.  This is being coordinated by Fiona Wallace our Year 7 – 9 Learning Community Leader. Fiona will have sent information to our current Year 6 students and their families this week to let them know further details.

Languages will be back in 2024!

I am elated to announce that we will be reimplementing a Languages Program at Kyabram P-12 College for 2024.  Schools across the state have the target to include a languages program across all year levels from Prep to Year 10.

For our students next year, we will run Auslan at Years Prep, 1, 2 and 7.

Auslan is short for Australian Sign Language.  We are extremely fortunate to have Ms Hannah Foster already on our staff who can teach Auslan to our students.  Auslan is a visual language that was developed by, and for, Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired.

Churinga 2022 and 2023

The long-awaited 2022 Churinga magazine is currently being printed and will be ready for families shortly.  It will be distributed to all families who had paid for it last year.

This year’s Churinga is in its final stages of proofreading and formatting.  It will be ready at the end of this year for families to purchase.  If you would like a copy of Churinga 2023, please pay $15 at our General Office by the end of November.  Churinga is also now available to order via our QKR App.  We don’t want anyone to miss out.  Please ensure you order by the end of November.

If you need any help with downloading the QKR App, please contact our team at the General Office.

Churinga is an indigenous term that means a sacred wooden or stone object carved by Aboriginal tribes in central Australia.  Churinga is a great way to hold the memories of our school years.

In preparation for the upcoming fire season, the Department of Agriculture have put together an information pack for our families.  It is designed to help farming communities to be prepared.  Please feel free to review the information provided in this pdf link.

On behalf of the Principal Team, thank you for your work and effort throughout this year.
