Wellbeing at TPS

Your Child's Wellbeing

Students are active participants in their own learning and wellbeing, feel connected and use their social and emotional skills to be respectful, resilient and safe. We understand that students reach their full potential only when they are happy, healthy and safe. We assess, design, implement, review and promote evidence based wellbeing initiatives. This work builds consistent best practice at TPS. We work closely with families, community and allied health professionals.

Buddies

We take care of our Mob at TPS. Buddies are established in Term one for the foundation students to have a Year 4 Buddy.  We align Steiner Foundation students with Class Four.

Our buddy system helps Foundation students to feel valued and supported, teach important social skills and create a caring ethos in our school.

Working with Parents/Carers

We value the input of our community, and we strive to support our community to engage in their child's learning and build their capacity as active learners.  We assist families to support and promote mental health and wellbeing.  We regularly communicate to families through Compass.

Respectful Relationships

Respectful Relationships supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours.  It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.  The Respectful Relationships curriculum is taught from Foundation to Year Six.

Zone of Regulations

The Zones is a systematic, cognitive behavioural approach used to teach us all to self-regulate our needs as well as our emotions and impulses in order to meet the demands of the environment and be successful socially.

This program categorises emotions into four colours - Blue (sad, tired), Green (Ready for learning), Yellow (excited, nervous), Red (Mad, angry).  The students then identify tools that they can use to move back to feeling green.

Find my 5

We take care of each other and if we have a problem I speak to a teacher.  To help students identify their helpers at school and at home we use "Find my 5" where children name 5 people (using their hand as a template) that they feel that they can ask for support.

Cultural Safety

Cultural safety is about creating an environment that is safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This means there is no assault, challenge or denial of their identity and experience. Cultural safety is about: Shared respect, shared meaning and shared knowledge.

Safe School

We are a proud to be a Safe School.  Safe Schools ensure schools are safe places for all students, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) students, and are free of discrimination.  We demonstrate our deadly value, "I am proud of who I am and I respect your story".

Child Safety Standards

Thornbury Primary School is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people and comply with the Child Safety Standards.  Our Child Safety officer is Anna Baker (Wellbeing Leader).  Staff, Students, Carers and Members of our community are encouraged to speak with Anna regarding any concerns in relation to a child.

Safeminds

Our staff are trained in SAFEMinds to them identify children with early signs of mental health issues, and offer them school-based interventions and/or external referrals.

School Nursing Program

All foundation students will be sent a pack from our School Nurse Program.  We encourage every family to return this and participate in the program. School nurses specialise in nursing that advances the wellbeing, and primary healthcare of students and staff within a school community.  School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual or potential health problems and provide case management services.

eSafety

We utilise digital technologies to support student learning across the curriculum. All members of our learning community are expected to be responsible, safe and ethical users of digital technologies.  Our students, staff and community are regularly provided training opportunities for training in eSafety.  This learning and empowerment is based on the eSafety modules BeSafe, BeKind, BeCurious, BeSecure.  All students annually sign the TPS Deadly ICT Agreement for Responsible, Safe and Ethical use of technology at TPS.

Breakfast Club

All students are welcome to attend out breakfast club.  It is run by parent volunteers, with a staff member present, in the Babajen each morning 8.30- 8.45. Let us know if you would like to volunteer. You just need to provide your current WWCC.
