On Tuesday 17th October, our Year 6 boys and Year 6 girls volleyball teams competed in the Knox Division Finals at Maroondah Nets. Both teams had progressed through the Rowville District Finals to earn their position on the day. I was lucky enough to coach both teams on the day, which provided me with the opportunity to watch all of their matches. I was amazed at the connectedness, encouragement and support on display from both teams. I also would like to mention that most of the students involved had not much experience in playing volleyball outside of Physical Education sessions.
Overall, our boys finished the day in 4th position with our girls taking out 7th position. The competition was extremely close however, which resulted in some very close games that certainly could have gone either way in terms of the outcome. Well done to all of the students involved for your achievement. I feel priviliged to be part of such a wonderful experience in your final year at Karoo Primary School.
Thank you to Amaya H and Jack D for being the captains of their respective teams, which involved taking on additional responsibilities throughout the day. I would also like to acknowledge Claire Bonaddio and Jacqui Gilbert for helping coach the teams, as well as provide assistance with scoring the matches.
On Wednesday 1st November, Mitchell H competed in the State Track & Field Finals at Lakeside Stadium in the 9/10 boys individual high jump event. Mitchell earned his position in this event due to his progression through the District Finals, Division Finals and Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals.
To summarise his high jump experience, Mitchell took on the initiative himself to write a reflection and process his journey from simply 'trying something new' to achieving individual greatness:
Today I went to VPSSA Athletics Track and Field day to compete in the State High Jump 9/10 boys event. Leading up to this event I have been training behind the scenes with Mr Leeson in the gym during lunch and afternoon breaks at school. Each week and event this year, I have seen personal improvements in the height of my jump and my ability to get over the bar with more and more ease. My personal best has improved so much over a short amount of time.
Before this year I have never competed in the high jump before. It is a lot of fun and I am really proud of myself for trying my best and not giving up. Today was a great day. I may not have jumped a personal best or received a medal, but I was super proud of myself for giving it a go and doing my best to represent our wonderful school.
When we got to Lakeside Athletics Stadium in Albert Park today I had goosebumps all over my body. Competing against so many skilled kids was a real honour. So many of them do this event as their ‘main’ sport and for me it has been a lot of fun to listen to Mr Leeson and use his ideas and coaching points to improve my jumps each session.
I want to say a very big thankyou to all of my school mates and teachers for supporting me. A very special and big thankyou to Mr Leeson for always being there when I need him. He has helped me get better at something I didn’t even know I could do and also to Miss Davies for being so encouraging.

Mitchell, on behalf of the whole Karoo Primary School community, we couldn't be prouder of your achievement. We would like to thank you enormously for representing our school with the values that you have instilled of personal excellence and tenacity. I would also like to use this opportunity to highlight the importance of never giving up, believing in yourself (and your ability) and recognising that you can achieve anything that you put your mind towards. Mitchell, you have personified this, and for that we thank you!
