STEM M.A.D Melbourne Showcase 2023

Earlier this term a group of Year 5 and 6 students; Lucas Foutzis, Lachie Turner, Lucas Bolanos Bulla, Henry Turner and Thomas Birt were selected by an expert panel from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools to attend the STEM MAD Student Showcase held at the Catholic Leadership Centre in Melbourne CBD. These students were invited to showcase their Design & Digital Technology projects they had worked on throughout Term 2. A huge congratulations to Henry Turner & Thomas Birt who were awarded the MACS Archbishop Award for Innovating for Social Justice for their project, The Flood Survival House. Well done!

The STEM MAD Student Showcase is a celebration of student learning designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrate the particularity of Catholic Schools; encouraging students to make a difference (MAD) in the world by acting for justice and the common good.

Lachlan Turner and Lucas Fourtzis - E.L.I

What an incredible experience. We went there to showcase our ladder called E.L.I (Excellent Ladder Intelligence). We had a great time. We had gelato and got to play with drones. It was a great experience seeing what other students had created but it was also amazing teaching people about what our project was all about. The highlight of the day was when we got to represent our school as guest speakers on Live FM which is a radio station that broadcasts big events, like the Adelaide Music Festival. The day was the best thing we have done for the school this year!

Lucas Bolanos Bulla - R.E.F.U

Hello, I’m Lucas BB and I would like to share my STEM MAD project experience. I enjoyed giving life to my idea, and was really excited when I was selected for the showcase. Presenting R.E.F.U to the judges and people that passed by was fun but my favourite part about that was the face they made when I finished my presentation. They were amazed! And don’t start me on the other projects. They. Were. Awesome! They all had great intentions and were all fabulous, some even could move! They all left me hanging in thoughts. And at the end I was very proud because I pushed myself to the hardest and well, it paid off. A highlight was when I got a signature from Ryan Evans, a contestant who participated in LegoMasters season 3 & 5! I was overjoyed. I couldn’t have felt more excited and happy, it felt like the best day of my life. Alas, here I come to an end so farewell readers, looking forward to the next adventure!

Henry Turner & Thomas Birt - Flood Survival House

We attended the MACS STEM MAD 2023 showcase with our idea, FSH. This stands for Flood Survival House. When we arrived at MACS we set up our display and our prototype and went to the welcoming ceremony. There were two showcase sessions, one was when the judging happened, the other was for people to roam around. After our lunch break we went and redeemed our free gelato. We then went to the awards ceremony and won the Archbishop's Award for Innovating for Social Justice. All in all it was a pretty successful event.
