Reminder of travel road laws and recommendations for families

If the child is between 4-7 years old, they must travel in a forward-facing child restraint or a booster seat.

If the child is over 7 years old and over 145cm, they are able to use an adult seat belt. However, if they are under 145cm, it is recommended to use a booster seat until they have outgrown it.

Children who are not tall enough to use an adult seat belt can slump into their seat. The sash part of their belt is up across their neck and the lap part of the seatbelt is then too high on their stomach which may cause more serious injuries in a crash

Children aged 7 years and over can travel in the front seat. However, research shows that children under 12 years are much safer travelling in the back seat.

The 5-step safety test can determine if your child is ready to move to an adult seatbelt
