Senior Girls Netball
On Tuesday the 7th of May, our senior netball team headed to Llanberis, Ballarat, to complete. After arriving at 10am, our first game started at 10:05am, so we stepped straight off the bus and onto the court. Each game consisted of two 10-minute halves, and we had six games to play.
Beaufort started well against our first opponents for the day, Woodmans Hill, with a quick pass to Felicity Stares resulting in a goal. Woodmans Hill put on a great display throughout the midfield, however our shooters, Reagan Fulford and Felicity were too strong, taking us to the halftime break with a 9 - 2 lead. Ellie Franc was dominant in Goal Keeper, applying great defensive pressure, while Molly Nichols was an intercepting machine in Goal Defence. BSC won their first game of the day, 16 - 3.
In game two, we faced SEDA, who were a tall team but we were agile and able to sneak in some bounce passes to get around them. Zarie Tiley was moved to our attacking end, scoring a goal. Sadly, SEDA were too strong and we were defeated 2 - 25.
In game three, we came up against a very strong Ballarat High School, who once again had height on their side. Jas Poyser put on a great display in Centre, whizzing around the court and always going for a second effort. Unfortunately, we lost 1 - 35.
Our fourth game saw us up against Mount Clear College, and with an even match in height, this game was intense. With the ball being held up in the mid-court, it was a low scoring game. When we did score, Mount Clear responded with one of their own. By halftime, it was 3 all. Zarie Tiley dominated in Centre, working well with Jayda Simpson and Jas on the wings, while Kaitlyn Schneider was strong in defence, intercepting the play. Spirits were high, with spectators, the bench and Miss Hughes, all shouting words of encouragement, hoping to help push the girls across the line. Felicity and Reagan worked wonders, scoring goal after goal in an awesome display of teamwork! When the final siren blew and scores were tallied, Beaufort had their second win for the day, defeating Mount Clear 8 - 7. Screams of excitement could be heard throughout the whole stadium.
Game five, against Phoenix College, was another nail-biter. Jas was put into goals to create space in our forward end and Jayda was great in Wing Defence, not allowing her opponent to get past her. Sienna was on fire, chasing loose balls and encouraging her team. Her precise feeds into the ring assisted our shooters. The half-time score saw us down 3 - 4. With a tough second half, Miss Hughes and the bench were once again out of their seats, nervous as to how the game would play out. In a dominant display of skill, Felicity and Reagan scored goal after goal, while Molly got an intercept in the last 30 seconds, passing it to our midcourters, who fed it through to our shooters in the nick of time. We took the win 12 - 11!
Our last game was a tough battle against Daylesford, which we lost 6 - 25. Despite this, BSC finished fourth out of the seven teams, winning three of our six games. The day was filled with fun and competitive spirit and our team is incredibly proud of our efforts. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Webb for his meticulous organization of the team, training, and the day, and to Miss Hughes for her invaluable coaching.
Intermediate Boys Football
On Thursday the 16th of May, BSC travelled to Ballarat to play in the Intermediate boy’s football tournament, with Mr Sev taking the reins, alongside his trusty assistant, Mr Wright. With a lack of Year 9/10s available, we were fortunate enough to have some Year 7s and 8s step up to help us out.
The first game saw us come up against Mt Rowan. Early goals from Ben Grant, Liam Sage and young bull, Louie Welsh, helped us burst out of the gates and take an early lead. Jasper in the ruck provided some great height and strength, while Nic Stares proved to be a brick wall in defence. Unfortunately, Mt Rowan were able to score 2 late goals, running over the top of us by 9 points.
Our second game was against a very strong Ballarat High School. Despite them having a significant height advantage, our inside mids, Tristan Drinkwater and Tom Grant, battled hard, however having suffered a few injuries, we went down by a few goals.
Next, we came up against Mt Clear, and we could almost smell a victory. Again, it was a strong start by our boys, with Louie Welsh kicking our first goal and Ben Grant following it up with two of his own. But again, due to several injuries the second half was difficult. Despite a solid backline display by the likes of Toby Wheeler, a disappointing second half led to Mt Clear kicking the last 3 goals, resulting in BSC going down by 13 points.
With Mr Wright now on a trip to hospital with an injured player, we desperately missed his sideline leadership. Against an incredibly strong Phoenix, our bad luck continued, as we finished the game with just 17 players on the ground. On a positive note, youngsters in Dillan Wade and Tom Arvidson stepped up in the face of adversity, while Rylee Jacka, who was handed the captaincy for the game, led from the front.
The entire team should be proud of the level of effort and commitment shown throughout the day, as we came up against some talented players and teams. Despite a depleted side, we gave it our all until the very end. We’d like to thank our fearless leaders, Mr Wright, and Mr Sev, who has started his coaching career 0-8.
