Debaters Rebut Well - May 22

On Wednesday May 22nd, two of Mullauna’s three debating teams went to Tintern Grammar to take part in the Ringwood region’s Debating Association of Victoria competition. One of our two C-grade teams (Floyd Dahmen, Bianca Unwin and Teiva Levy) did not get the chance to strut their debating stuff because of a late forfeit by their opponents.

The B-grade team of Angus Pappas, Jasmine Armistead and Lucy Gordon in a battle with Templestowe College successfully argued that "The Victorian Government should implement a youth curfew for under 18s". Rasheed Korbatieh helped them prepare and they were coached by Ms Davidson.

Our other C-grade team of Matilda Huppatz, Hunter Wilkins-Byrd and Taylor Cameron also did impressively in arguing that "Entry fees should not be charged at all Australia’s natural parks". They were supported in their brainstorm preparation by Ethan Blakeman. They narrowly lost to Yarra Valley Grammar.

The teams were particularly impressive because they only had an hour to prepare. They also could not use computers or get help from anyone.

Debaters Tackle Secret Topics - June 12

On Wednesday, June 12 Mullauna’s three debating teams went to Tintern Grammar to take part in the Ringwood region’s Debating Association of Victoria competition. For all teams it was a secret topic. The topic was only announced an hour before the debate. Within that hour, each team had to brainstorm arguments and write their speeches by themselves, without any help from teachers or computers.

The B-grade team of Jasmine Armistead, Leroy Szabo and Rasheed Korbatieh narrowly lost a battle with Yarra Valley Grammar arguing against the topic that .....

"We should limit the number of a flights that each person or company can take in a year".

Our two C-grade teams both debated Yarra Valley Grammar and argued against the proposal that

"It should be compulsory for students to have at least one overseas school camp during high school".

Our team of Floyd Dahmen, Caitlin Fankhauser and Bianca Unwin (all Year 10) were victorious. Floyd was named best speaker. Our team of Ethan Blakeman, Bella McKinnon (both Year 9) and Victoria Halpin with support by Taylor Cameron (both Year 10) argued well, but were unfortunately defeated.

 Congratulations to all involved.
