Community Languages Korean

Ms Sara You and Mrs Sidney Park

Korean B students were quite busy, learning about various celebrations that happen in South Korea during May. Students enjoyed learning about the different meanings of carnation flowers that were made for both mums and dads to celebrate Parent’s Day on the 8th of May. Students also created carnation flowers to deliver to their favourite teachers around the school on the 15th of May as it was the Teacher’s Day in South Korea! They were successful in spreading happiness and joy around the school.

In Korean A, Stage 1-3 students have been learning how to greet, colours, numbers and how to ask and say age in Korean. Stage 1 has discussed common characters in Korean folktales and compared them to ones from other stories that they are familiar with. Stage 2 and 3 withdrawal students have worked on creating a Google slide presentation introducing themselves in Korean.

In Kindergarten, students have learnt that Korean is a language spoken in a different country. They have been practising how to write their name in Korean and the first five consonants of Hangul (Korean alphabet). Students have learnt how to greet the teacher and their friends, how to ask and say their name and how to count in Korean. Students have also learnt to describe the weather as hot or cold; the words umbrella, rain, teacher and thank you; seasons and classroom items in Korean. Students have consolidated their knowledge in creative ways such as using Hangul magnets, whiteboards, singing and craft.

We have started a new international joint program with Gomyung Elementary School in Korea. The Year 5 Korean class, 4K (Ms De Sousa) and 5C (Mrs Gullota) will have joint classes twice a term where students have the opportunity to interact and learn via an online platform to allow students to learn about the world, other cultures and build friendships. Our first lesson was during Week 11 in Term 1, students had a valuable and fun lesson involving joint discussion, sharing and connection. Our second lesson was in Week 4 of this term, students discussed their daily routine, what they typically do on the weekend and shared more about school life.
