Whole School Assembly this Friday

This Friday 24th May, we have a whole school assembly at Buninyong. As is the usual routine, we will meet in the courtyard at Buninyong at 8:45am. We will get to the library as well, so don’t forget to bring your child’s book bags, or any library books to return. We will bus back to Scotsburn at recess, to finish the day at Scotsburn.

“The Dip”

As we know, we are working lots at both Buninyong and Scotsburn at the moment on Learner Agency, which means students having ownership and empowerment in their learning journeys.

At Scotsburn, we are all learning to become independent, self-regulated learners. This week, we focussed on PERSISTENCE, which means not giving up, and using lots of problem-solving strategies to keep going. Click on the link below, to watch a short video about “The Dip”.

We would love everyone to think about when you have been in “The Dip”, and what problem-solving strategies can you use to get out of “The Dip”? If you have time, have a chat at home about some examples of being in “The Dip.”

Over the next week we will learn more about how to get out of “The Dip”.

More Work in the Yard

Ian and his team of helpers were back at it on Monday this week, planting some indigenous grasses on the border of the oval. These grasses will assist with retaining soil, forming a natural border, as well as minimising the need for mowing in the area. The weather held out long enough for all planting to be complete. A massive thank you again to Ian for volunteering his time.

Homework and Reader Diaries

A reminder that handwork needs to be handed in every Thursday. New homework will be given out the following Friday, and all students must have their homework book at school to glue their homework in ready, and organised for the week ahead. You can track your child’s homework progress on Compass.

Reader diaries should be at school every day. We encourage students to change their readers daily where necessary and have these at school as part of their daily routine. Reading nightly is part of the homework and is checked weekly by the teacher. Our term reading goal is 60 nights this term. Our stretch goal is ‘100’ with some of our students already making the stretch goal target. Well done to these superstar readers!!!

New Tables and Chairs

This week we were donated some upgraded chairs and tables, thanks to Yuille Park Community College. These will be put to great use in the Japanese room, being much more functional for all students at the campus.

Education Week - Spotlight on STEM

Thanks to Miss Middlin for her amazing lunchtime science experiments last week. This year as part of Education Week, there has been a Spotlight on STEM. Our students are very lucky to participate in a wide range of STEM experiences with Miss Middlin.

Family Groups

Last Friday in Family Groups, our cooking group cooked up a storm in the kitchen, creating a lovely pasta dish, using our campus-grown tomatoes and zucchini. As part of the cooking program, our students focus on the whole process in the kitchen, including preparation, cooking, setting a table, table manners, and washing up. The cooperation skills on display in the kitchen are incredible!

The sustainability group last week spent some time looking at materials that can and can’t be recycled, and then went on a scavenger hunt in the yard to find different types of plastics. It was amazing to see what was found, with some really deep conversations and learning taking place.

Flynn’s Photo Portfolio!

This week we would love to share some of the amazing work Flynn in SC2 has been doing as part of the Photography Scholarship program. Each Thursday afternoon, Flynn participates with some selected Buninyong students in photography workshops, developing skills in all areas of photography. As you can see above, Flynn definitely has an eye for detail. Amazing shots Flynn!

Parent Community Road Safety Meeting

Over the past 12 months, we have had a number of parents raise concerns about the safety of entering Platts Rd and the service road from the Midland Highway and then re-entering the Highway after leaving the service road, particularly during the busy drop off and pick up times. Concerns have also been raised about the speed limit on the Midland Hwy.

A number of our parents have also contacted our local Member of Parliament, Michaela Settle to discuss concerns. This had led to us confirming a meeting at the campus to discuss all concerns, speed zone policies and risk mitigation strategies. In attendance will be Michaela Settle MP, Department of Transport & Planning representatives Michael Bailey (Executive Director – Barwon South West & Grampians) and Ben Anderson (Manager Movement & Safety), as well as a Council representative.

For any possible action and improvements to take place, we would love as many parents to be in attendance as possible, to strengthen our safety concerns as a school community. Please put the following details in your diary, and if you can possibly make it, we would love to see you there.

A massive thank you to those parents who have raised concerns and continually have the safety of our families and community at heart. Let’s hope for a positive result from this meeting.

After chatting with a few parents in the last week, we think that it would be great to hold a short morning/afternoon tea in the days leading up to the meeting, so that we can all be on the same page and present a united stance. More details to come in next week’s newsletter.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

SC1 has certainly been working hard. All students are doing a fabulous job at doing their best and ensuring that although the day may look a little different at times, it is still important for everyone to ‘have a go’ and be respectful towards others. Our little learners have certainly shown some great learning habits!

In Reading, we have continued our exploration of fables and looking at narratives. In particular, the important parts that make up a narrative. In Writing, we have made the connection between fables and narratives, and students have had the opportunity to write their own narrative or retell in their own words a known fable.

This week in Maths we have moved on to multiplication and explored the connection of repeated addition. It has been fabulous to see the excitement when students feel they are moving towards mastery.

Yesterday, students went to the Buninyong campus for an incursion. Students had the opportunity to meet ‘Spot’ the robotic dog and learn about all the things Spot can do and the specific mechanical specifications needed to make Spot the great robot that he is. Students will now be designing their robots in class and exploring what makes their robots unique and what special features they may need. Please remember to send in any materials from home that your child may like to use when building their robot.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

It has been such a pleasure to see all students in SC2 work through the assessments in class over the past week with such enthusiasm and positivity. Our goal in class is to always aim for our personal best (whatever that may be), and everyone has certainly achieved that!

In Reading, we have continued to look at strategies to effectively summarise. Students have been able to summarise books that they are reading in both verbal and written form.

In Writing, our Space Information Reports have been edited and published, with us now moving onto some Space persuasive writing. We look forward to sharing our information reports soon.

During Maths sessions, we have been developing our addition and subtraction strategies to apply to some work on fractions. We look forward to a pizza fractions celebration next week!!!

Similar to SC1, please ensure your child has their reader diary at school each day and their homework book at school every Thursday. We have been back on track with this in the past few weeks, so let’s keep it up!

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.
