Newport Library Visit

This week Foundation students went for a local walk to Newport Library. We met Georgia and Laura who shared some information about the library. They told us all the fun things that we can do whilst there, what we can borrow to take home and remembering to return items back so we could borrow some more amazing stuff, such as, books, instruments, robots, etc. We are so lucky to have a Library in our community. A big thank you to our parents that came along.

All Foundation ‘authors’ got together to share their well written and illustrated narratives amongst each other. There were lots of interesting beginnings, with problems that got solved at the end. A great start to writing narratives, let’s see what else our authors will produce in the future.

Year 1 News

Science Discovery Dome Incursion

On Tuesday 14th May the Year 1 students were wowed by the Science Discovery Dome incursion which was set up in the multi purpose room.

Their excitement was evident in their gasps and squeals as they saw the giant inflatable dome, and even more so when we sat down inside and saw images of the sky were projected onto the roof like a mini planetarium. We learnt about how the earth rotates around the sun making it go from night to day, and how we can track a full day by using shadows created by the sun.

We discovered why we get more daylight and warmer weather in summer and less daylight in winter, which helped to explain some of the natural changes we are seeing happening around us now, such as the trees changing colour, the grass getting greener and it being dark at bedtime.

Students were amazed to learn that we only ever see one side of the moon, and the side we see lit up is super hot, while the other side of the moon is too cold for humans to travel to. Overall, we loved this incursion and it helped us to both understand and answer some of our BQT topic questions about the changes we see happening around us all the time.

"As soon as I saw the Discovery Dome I was wondering what was inside, nothing or a projector putting a video on? When I got in, it was amazing! I was very interested and I loved it.  I was so excited when Nick put the night video on, it looked like it never ended. I learnt that the sun is made out of gas.  I love space.  I also learnt that moon can be very cold and hot." - Sam 1IJ

Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday, 22nd May, all of the Year 3 – 6 students made their way down to the Newport Park Athletics Track for our annual athletics carnival.

The day went well for all in attendance as the students went about participating in eight track and field events in the glorious sunshine. The day is used to determine who qualifies for the school’s athletics team. This team will participate at the District Carnival in August against other schools in our district. The team will be announced early in Term Three.

We would also like to thank the many parents who volunteered to come along and help out on the day. Days like this cannot take place without your assistance.

Art is Our Currency

Recently our Art Extension students visited the opening of the Art is Our Currency Exhibition at Note Printing Australia in Craigieburn, where some of their artwork was being exhibited. Students got to view their artwork on display along side international artists and were treated to a VIP experience with morning tea, a workshop with artist Carlos Almenar and a tour of the facilities. All students, staff and parents who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were fascinated by the UV ink used for security features on money.
