In The Artroom

Week 4

Students continued their study of the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama – popular for her polka dot rooms, pumpkins and her infinity rooms where she uses mirrors to produce an amazing effect.

The Preps had four different activities based on Yayoi’s artwork. One was creating 3D pumpkins from playdough; drawing and painting a design of Yayoi in watercolour; contributing to the Prep collaboration painting and colouring a Kusama sheet.

Grades 1 and 2 focused on Yayoi’s influence in fashion design. They painted polka dots of assorted colours onto clothes using textile paints. These will be displayed when completed.

Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 created a 3D pumpkin with polka dots then placed in a prism of mirrors to create a Yayoi infinity room creation. This was great fun and very interesting.

This week artclub was on Tuesday and was held outside with students able to use chalk to create pictures on the asphalt.. On Wednesday the gr 6s continued their art extension workshops. They finished off their chalk pastel pictures.

There are currently two local art exhibitions that can be entered by students. They are the 2024 CAVENDISH FLEECE AND FLOWER SHOW and the BYADUK SPRING SHOW. Please see Ms Brown if you are interested in entering as an individual as the school won’t be entering student’s artwork for these shows.

Week 5

With it being a short week this week, all grades played “Roll a Kusama” – a game where they had to roll the die to draw the certain element of a Kusama’s picture.

They then had to colour using textas, pencils and crayons.

Next week we will be taking on the challenge of Origami – Japanese paper folding! That'll be fun 😊.

Ms Brown is asking for three dressmaker mannequins to use in a display of the gr ½ Kusama clothes designs. If you have one at home that the school could borrow for a few weeks, that would be fantastic! Please contact Ms Brown or bring in on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Artist of the week awards go to:

  • Sophie Stewart
  • Ruby Rankin
  • Thea Hibberd
  • William Iredell

Well done to everyone on an amazing week of Art!

STEM

Preps

Last week in STEM, Preps continued their movement work. They explored how the size and shape of an object changes how it rolls.

This week, they explored how the size and shape of an object changes how to slides.

Grade 1/2

Last week, grade 1/2s looked at the difference between natural and human-made/artificial sources of light.

This week, they had a ‘Challenge Week’, creating a mini-spoon and stick catapult.

Grade 3/4

Last week, grade 3/4s continued with their forces work and explored the difference between potential and kinetic energy. They then made a catapult to demonstrate their understanding of forces applied to this.

This week, only one grade 3/4 class had STEM due to the Melbourne Cup public holiday. This class looked at binary code and wrote their names in this coding structure.

Grade 5/6

Last week, grade 5/6s revised water and wind as renewable energy sources.

This week, they had a ‘Challenge Week’, creating a mini-spoon and stick catapult, with some students altering their designs to see if they could get the cotton ball to go even further then their original designs.
