Performing Arts

Danika Dakic & Teresa Kos

What an exciting and creative first term it was in Performing Arts! Our students have been busy developing their musical and performance skills, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and confidence grow.

Our Preps have been introduced to the world of music by exploring different instruments and learning to identify their sounds. They have particularly enjoyed listening to and playing percussion instruments, discovering how music can tell a story. One of the highlights of the term was learning the song Never Smile at a Crocodile, which they performed with their buddies at the school fete. Their big smiles and enthusiastic singing made for a heartwarming and super cute performance! This term, we are hoping to perform the song at assembly for anyone who may have missed out at the fete!

Our Grade 1 students have been focusing on the key elements of music, including pitch, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. Through singing, movement, and instrumental activities, they have been learning how music can change in speed, volume, and mood to create different effects. It has been wonderful to see their growing ability to listen to and describe music using these terms. Their developing musical awareness will continue to grow next term as they explore more complex rhythms and melodies.

Our Grade 2 students have been immersing themselves in the world of performance and expression. Last term, they were exploring how we use our voices, facial expressions, and body language to bring stories to life. They particularly enjoyed working on their puppet shows, creating unique characters and storylines that they will perform in front of their classmates this term. This unit has encouraged them to think creatively, collaborate with their peers, and develop their confidence in performing.

It was a fantastic first term in Performing Arts, and we are so proud of the enthusiasm and creativity our students have shown. We can’t wait for another term full of music, movement, and performance!

- Miss Kos

This year we welcomed two new Music teachers, Danika Dakic and Teresa Kos. They have organised our first BSPS choir, students in grades Prep-6 have the privilege of joining choir if they want to at Thursday lunch play. At an assembly last term, the choir performed 'Your The Voice' by John Farnham. It was a chance for the lower grades to experience how it feels to be singing in front of a crowd of people and for the five Year 6 students that were in the choir to get a taste/feel of what it is going to be like on stage at production.

The Staxa-fun Fete took place on the 29th of March and a few BSPS students sang live at the fete including:

  • Ivy from Grade 4
  • A group of Grade 4 girls
  • Maeve and Lola from Grade 6
  • All Grade 3 Students
  • Grade 5 and Prep students

Some ex students also sang at the fete.

Students get the opportunity to have singing lessons every week with Danika Dakic are learning songs to perform at a recital later in the year, this will showcase what they have learnt.

All grades Prep-6 have an hour a week dedicated to Performing Arts with Teresa or Danika where they are learning songs to perform on various dates. The Grade 6 cohort are currently learning ANZAC songs to showcase at the ANZAC Day assembly.

Students say this new program has been really fun.
