Grade 6

Elaine Kos & Julie Price

Forrest Classroom

Last term the Year 6s attended Forest Classroom. It was a very exciting but long week. The first day we all had to do the long walk so we could experience it at least once. It was 7.5kms, the rest of the week we had a choice to either do the 4.5km walk or the 7.5km walk. Both walks were pretty tiring but still really fun.

We also did some learning, in Maths we learnt some techniques from Miss G on  how to measure how long a tree is. We also got in groups and made a sound scape with birds chirping, people walking and rain falling, that was pretty entertaining too. On Wednesday a kind man called Mal came in, he taught us about war, Kokoda and the 39th battalion. We got given some quizzes and had a lot of questions to answer. We got in a lot of groups and did heaps of group work, we mixed them all up so we could all get to know each other a bit better.

What Grade Six is Doing in the Classroom

Last term in reading the Grade 6 cohort was looking at war books and books by Mark Wilson. We have also looked at other picture story books like Fox & The House of Narcissist. With these books we were making predictions, inferring and looking at interesting words.

Another Subject that we have been working on is writing. In writing we have been doing information texts on Australian leaders. We have also been doing buddy writing and free choice writing.

In Maths we have been working on our times tables and to do that we have been doing tables partners which is where you partner up and do times tables while timing yourself. We have also been doing Addition, Subtraction and now we have started working on Multiplication.

In our inquiry unit we have been studying WW1 and WW2. We have been assigned a project to do at home about a veteran who has fought in any type of war and we have to create a fact file and a creative diorama or presentation to present it with. We are ecstatic to get to show others our projects next term.

Compost

At Belgrave South Primary School every week there are five Year 6 students that collect the compost bins. In the compost bins we have found paper, cardboard, sandwiches on zip-lock bags, cupcake wrappers, chip wrappers and even pencils. These things are not compostable so they will not be but in the compost. So make sure to tell your kids to put the right things in the compost.

Here is a list of things that go in the compost bin:

  • Fruit scraps like banana peels, apple cores and seeds
  • Vegetable scraps are also accepted
  • No meat/food packaging allowed

Thank you for composting.

10 Cent Refund

At BSPS we have had the idea to have 10 cent refund bins.

Last term, we had made $15.20 and that doesn't even include the fete! So make sure when it's Sushi Thursday, wait until people come around asking for your juice boxes and with the Moo boxes from the canteen, make sure to bring them back to the canteen and the canteen monitors will collect them. We ask parents and guardians to remind their kids of these rules and guidelines.

Swimming

Recently the school has been participating in the school swimming program. So many kids succeeded in going through to the next rounds but everyone who participated in every level did an amazing job. A couple of single swimmers and a few relays made it all the way through to the regional championship and even though no one got through, it was an amazing effort by everyone. One of the relays that made it to regionals included some of our younger Year 6 students and Year 5s who came first in their relay races in district and division but unfortunately dropped out in the regionals finals. These students say it was very exciting at the regional championships because the amount of people watching was incredible and the pressure was huge. Thanks to Mr Anderson and Mrs James for organising the day for all our next generation swimmers. Congratulations to all our swimmers and well done on having the courage to enter the trials.
