Year 6 News

Reading

In Reading, Year 6 students finished off the term by exploring the differences between poetry and song lyrics. They discussed how both forms use rhythm, rhyme, and emotion to express ideas, but also considered how songs rely on melody and performance to convey meaning. It was a creative and engaging way to end the term!Upon returning to school, Year 6 students have begun their learning through exploring the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. This text tells a story about a boy born with a facial difference, as he navigates the challenges of starting school for the first time. Year 6 students are focusing on comprehending the events of the novel while listening to the story, and showing their creativity skills through designing their own front covers for the novel. This reading unit on Wonder is designed to be impactful through helping the year 6 students explore themes such as kindness, empathy, acceptance and resilience.

Inquiry

Year 6 students presented their Natural Disaster Risk Management Plans in the final week of term. After researching an Australian natural disaster (bushfire, flood, or cyclone), they created presentations that explained the causes, impacts, and real-life examples of their chosen event. Students included visual diagrams, charts, and data to show their understanding, and spoke clearly to share how communities can prepare for and respond to these disasters. It was a fantastic way to finish our Inquiry unit and showcase their research and communication skills!

At the start of this term, Year 6 students began exploring different types of government systems around the world and comparing them to Australia’s democracy. They learned about the key values of our democratic system and developed a strong understanding of what democracy means in practice.
