Reading
To finish off Term 3, Year 5 students continued their author study on Gus Gordon. They studied and researched important information about Gus Gordon, such as his background, some of the books he has written and illustrated, whether he has been successful in winning awards and also spoke about their favourite book and character.
To begin Term 4, Year 5 students have been learning all about explanation text features to assist them with writing their own explanation texts. They have learnt about the structure of this text type, highlighting key features such as the title, opening statement, connectives, technical vocabulary and conclusion.

Writing
In Writing, Year 5 students ended Term 3 by continuing to explore procedural texts by working with a partner to create their own board game. As a team, students brainstormed ideas, drafted instructions using sequencing words and imperative verbs and drafted, revised and edited their game instructions, ensuring they had included all of the features of a procedural text before publishing their final games. On the last day of term 3, Year 5 students had the opportunity to share and play their board games with their peers. Take a look at some of their board games below!

Students looked closely at a variety of mentor texts to see how explanations work, brainstormed ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions, researched their chosen topics and practised paraphrasing so that information was written in their own words. They used cause and effect structures and planned and drafted their own explanation texts.

Maths
To finish off Term 3, Year 5 students learnt how to read and interpret a variety of graphs, such as pie graphs, line plots and double bar graphs. Students practised answering questions based on the data and predicting trends.
To begin Term 4, Year 5 students started their new unit on Location and Transformation. Students learnt how to locate points on coordinate grids using the x- and y-axis and how to write coordinates correctly. They also learnt about the differences between coordinates and grid references. To apply their skills, they participated in fun and engaging activities, such as classroom Battleships and mystery picture grids.

Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 5 students ended Term 3 by finalising and presenting their Canva Biome projects to their peers. Students practised their presentation skills by making eye contact with their audience, speaking clearly and showing confidence. They shared their presentations and gave their peers an insight into the biome they researched, by including information such as the temperature and climate, the location, the different plants and animals and some interesting facts.
To begin Term 4, Year 5 students were introduced to their new Inquiry unit, Demokratika! They explored what makes up the values of Australia and why democracy is important. Students began by sharing what they already knew and what they wondered through a KWL chart.

Social and Emotional Learning
To finish off Term 3, Year 5 students explored the concept of respect. They discussed what respect means, who we show it to and where it can be seen. To build on this learning, students were introduced to the schoolwide respect poster competition, where they created persuasive and creative posters promoting respect. Year 5 students worked extremely hard to include catchy phrases, creative pictures and strong visual messages to show the importance of respect.
To begin Term 4, Year 5 students have revisited classroom expectations and reflected on the CPS school values of Responsibility, Resilience and Kindness. As there is only one more term left of 2025, students have discussed what makes a good leader, discussing the qualities and behaviours that will help them be positive role models for younger students and successful leaders in their last year of primary school.

Auslan
In Auslan, Year 5 students finished off Term 3 by revisiting and practising the signs for numbers. Students were excited and intrigued as they were introduced to numbers beyond 100, even 1000!
To begin Term 4, students learnt how to sign different types of weather. They learnt the signs weather, rain, wind, snow, wet, warm, cold, hot, storm, sun, lightning, thunder, clouds, dry, hail and temperature.
Special Event
CPS Market Night: On Thursday the 18th of September, CPS families were invited to enjoy an afternoon filled with stalls, games, entertainment, tasty food and plenty of fun for everyone at the CPS Market Night. They worked hard on their creative artwork and designs to encourage everyone to come along and join in on the fun!
