Year 3 News

Reading

The Year 3 Cohort concluded Term 3 by focusing on non-fiction texts. Students explored how to identify the main idea, which is the most important point the author wants the reader to understand. Students learned to pick out key information and summarise it in their own words.

To kickstart Term 4, students explored how authors use language to build plots and portray settings in fiction texts. Through rich picture books and descriptive passages, the Year 3s analysed how authors choose words to set the scene and create a specific mood whether it’s a peaceful forest or a spooky, abandoned house!

“We have been reading fiction text stories. We can see how settings and characters are described.” - Tyler 3A

“One example of descriptive language is ‘the deep, dark forest’. This can make people feel scared.” - William 3A

Writing

Students finished off Term 3 by publishing their travel brochure. They organized their information into sections with headings, colorful illustrations, and persuasive language to attract visitors. Using their creativity, they designed eye-catching brochures and practiced writing with clear, exciting details.

On their first week back, students drafted a narrative by first organizing their ideas using a planning sheet or story map. They then wrote their first draft, focusing on developing characters, setting, and a clear sequence of events.

Maths

In the final week of Term 3, Year 3 students explored division and the different ways it can be represented. They practised using strategies such as equal groups, repeated subtraction, and arrays, while discovering the inverse relationship between multiplication and division through fact families. To consolidate their learning, students created crafts using numbers from their fact families and applied these strategies to solve real-life problems.

Building on this learning, students began Term 4 by revising multiplication and division through a range of fun games and activities. From board games to bingo, the Year 3s strengthened their recall of facts and deepened their understanding of how the two operations are connected, all while having fun with their peers!

Inquiry

In the final week of Term 3, students created a poster about their favourite place in Australia by choosing a location they loved or wanted to visit. They included interesting facts and drawings to show what makes the place significant. To make their posters engaging, they used bold titles, neat writing, and colourful designs to share their ideas clearly.

During the first week of Term 4, students thought of rules by discussing situations at school or home where rules help everyone stay safe and respectful. They worked in groups to brainstorm fair and helpful rules, thinking about how each one solves a problem or prevents conflict. Then, they explained why the rules are necessary by giving examples of what could happen without them.

Social and Emotional Learning

In the final week of Term 3, Year 3 students learned about kindness and the importance of focusing on their own actions. They discussed how being kind means showing respect to others, concentrating on their own work, and understanding that everyone learns in different ways. Each student created an A4 poster titled “How I Learn Best,” illustrating the strategies and supports that help them learn successfully.

To begin Term 4, students revisited classroom expectations and school values — responsibility, kindness, and resilience. They reflected on what these values look like in action and discussed ways to demonstrate them through their choices and behaviour each day.

“We can show resilience by trying our best.” - Deepti 3C“We raise our hands before asking a question.” - Holly 3C

Special Event - Excursion to Toolangi State Forest

At the end of Term 3, Year 3 students had the incredible opportunity to take part in the Forest Discovery Program at Toolangi State Forest. The day was filled with exploration, discovery, and connection with the natural world. Guided by experienced environmental educators, students learned about local ecosystems, identified native plants and animals, and engaged in meaningful conversations around forest conservation.

The program also included fun team-building activities, giving students the chance to collaborate, problem-solve, and build confidence in the outdoors. This excursion supported our Term 3 Inquiry unit, helping students deepen their understanding of the environment and their role in protecting it.

We’re so proud of how engaged and respectful the students were throughout the day.

“We had lots of fun and did lots of activities like walking through the forest.” - Isabelle 3A

“The forest was very majestical and we had lots of fun.” - James 3A

“We went to the room and looked at different animals.” - Asinat 3A

Attendance Matters

Coming to school every day is important. When students are in class, they learn more, stay on track, and build good habits. Missing school can make it hard to catch up and understand new concepts. At CPS, we want all students to do their best so we ask families to help make sure students are here on time every day. Every day at school helps you grow!
