Principal's Message

2025 School Theme - Why Team, Why Team Westbreen

Dear Westbreen PS Families,

welcome to week 8 and another week full of exciting learning and hands on activities with our upcoming Robotics and STEAM learning experiences.  We hope everyone has an enjoyable week with the cold weather truly settling upon us.

School Values & Policies

I kindly ask all families to engage in conversations about school values with their children this week, as we will consistently explore them further in our Respectful Relationships program, which takes place every Thursday across the school.

The school values are:

- Respect

- Responsibility

- Achievement

- Care and Compassion

- Cooperation

We are highlighting our values each week during our assemblies and recognising a “Student of the Week.”

Our school values are also outlined in our school policies that support Westbreen's commitment to a safe and inclusive environment.

Below is an excerpt from our ‘Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy’:

"Westbreen Primary School is committed to providing a safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment for all students. We understand that students can reach their full potential only when they are happy, healthy, and safe. A positive school culture, where student participation is encouraged and valued, helps to engage students and support their learning. Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and academic outcomes are closely linked. The objective of this policy is to create and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment, consistent with our school’s values."

I would also like to highlight our ‘Inclusion and Diversity’ Policy.

The purpose of this policy is to explain that:

“Westbreen Primary School strives to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment which values the human rights of all students and staff. Westbreen Primary School is committed to creating a school community where all members of our school community are welcomed, accepted and treated equitably and with respect regardless of their backgrounds or personal attributes such as race, language, religious beliefs, gender identity, disability or sexual orientation so that they can participate, achieve and thrive at school”.

This policy also outlines the school commitment to the reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities.

Further information on our school values and policies can be found on our school website: Our School - Westbreen Primary School

Thank you for your continued support.

Curriculum initiatives in 2025

I would like to highlight two initiatives taking place in 2025:

1. Maths 2.0 (Please refer to curriculum page for further information).

2. Disability Inclusion

Maths 2.0

The Maths 2.0 initiative involves the resequencing and realignment of content areas to more effectively integrate the proficiencies of Mathematics and support the development of key concepts for learners. For Foundation to Year 2, Maths 2.0 focuses on play and exploration-based learning, responding to research on how children learn most effectively. This approach aligns with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). The Probability strand will also begin at Level 3, allowing students to consolidate their foundational skills before progressing further, compared to the previous Maths 1.0 curriculum.

Disability Inclusion

Key parts of Disability Inclusion:

A new tiered funding model

A new funding model is being rolled out with more investment to help us support inclusive practices. The model will allow us to make the adjustments our students need to help with their participation, engagement and learning at school. It provides additional investment that our school can use to support groups of students like those with autism, ADHD and other learning difficulties.

A new Disability Inclusion Profile

The profile will help our school and families identify the strengths, needs and educational adjustments we can make to help students with disability. The profile will be completed with the support of key people who understand the student’s education and support needs. An independent facilitator will help us work through the profile with families.

Investment in building skills and knowledge in inclusive education

A range of new activities and supports will build the knowledge and skills of our school’s workforce. This means our school staff will have more access to specialist expertise, coaching, professional learning and support.

We will continue to provide updates to families as we proceed with the implementation stage at Westbreen Primary School in 2025.

Planning Week

In Week 10, our staff will be engaged in planning sessions within Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to develop key learning progressions for Term 3 in Literacy, Numeracy, Inquiry, and Wellbeing. During this planning day, teams from across the school will create learning tasks that address the targeted needs of students in these curriculum areas for the upcoming term. As a result, your child's specialist classes may differ from their usual schedule during Week 10 and will be held all on one day.

Reminders from last week's newsletter

Playgroup - every Thursday 9am to 10:30am - All families are welcome!

Last week, we had a high turnout, with many children aged 5 years and under having fun. Thank you to Ms. Kerry and Georgia Poletti Moulds, parent of Raphy, for all your help.

2026 Enrolments - Thank you to all the families that already have submitted their enrolment forms!

We encourage our 2026 Foundation families to visit the office to complete the enrolment process by filling out the school enrolment form and providing evidence of their child's date of birth and immunisation record. To assist with planning, we kindly request that parents finalise their enrolments by the end of this term. This is vital, as we will begin workforce planning in early Term 3. If you have any questions or need clarification regarding the enrolment process, please contact Ms. Kerry Parfett, our Community and Enrolment Facilitator.

Year 4-6 Student Opinion Survey

Thank you to all our students who participated in the Year 4-6 Student Opinion Survey. We are excited to receive this feedback and start working on ensuring that every student feels heard and valued in our school.

Upcoming Dates

  • Tuesday, July 1st- 12.00pm- 8.00pm - Reporting Day - Term 2

Please remember that during the conferences, students must stay with their families and be supervised.
