Why we loved the Sydney Writer's Festival
Our Book Club loved the Sydney Writers Festival (SWF). One of the highlights was meeting up with our sister Book Club, Brigidine College (pictured). It was a special moment for both schools as we had all voted Hayley Lawrence’s Into the Wild as our favourite book. Hearing from Hayley about her writing process was a treat as well as getting a fan photo! Her warm and vibrant personality shone through, especially in her book signing message to us (pictured), which we absolutely loved.
We all agreed the moment we loved the most was hearing from the acclaimed American author Neal Shusterman. His talk was as engrossing as one of his novels as you’d expect from someone who’s written over 50 books and won multiple awards. Neal spoke passionately about tackling the big issues through imaginative storytelling. One book that particularly inspired us was Courage to Dream: Tales of Hope in the Holocaust, which took him 13 years to write. Bryce (Year 8) left the session eager to dive into it.
House Captains champion the Edmund Rice Readers’ Cup
While House Captains Sam, Ben, Nikolai, and Christian are usually known for their enthusiastic support of The Sports, yesterday they stepped up to promote reading. At the Year 10 Assembly, the captains delivered passionate pitches for the Edmund Rice Readers’ Cup, encouraging their Houses to take part in the challenge.
From their perspective, they highlighted reasons to read:
• Earn 1 House Point for every book read
• Score 25 House Points for completing the challenge
• Enjoy Morning Tea with Mr Ronchetti in the Principal’s Garden as a Champion Reader
Indeed, it is something wonderful for our College to consider that the House Cup could be decided not just on the field but in the pages of a good book.

The Edmund Rice Readers’ Cup is attached. The reading challenge fosters a deeper engagement with reading and challenges Year 10 students to extend their literary skills.
