Foundation (Prep)

English
We have introduced the new letters, Hannah Hippo /h/, Eric Elephant /e/ and Nigel Numbat /n/. Students continue to review the letters we have learnt so far (m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, d, c and o) and practise word building (hop, pet, hat, red, etc). Every morning we complete whole class tasks which build on our knowledge. This fortnight we have extended our focus to words with 3 and 4 sounds. The children have also been introduced to more high frequency words to assist them with reading and writing captions and simple sentences.
We have introduced small group work into our morning literacy session. Every student will have the opportunity to work in a small guided teacher group each week, which focuses on reading decodable texts and practising word building with the letters we have learnt so far. When working independently, students are working with literacy games and puzzles or completing paper-based tasks, to consolidate their understanding.
Maths
In Maths we have introduced the concept of Addition. The class has been practising making the combinations of numbers that make ten, e.g. 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, etc. We have referred to these combinations of numbers at school as 'Friends of Ten'.
We then started to talk about Addition Number Stories. The class read worded problems and talked about how we could work out the Maths problem in the story. We listened carefully, thought about the numbers in the story and then added them together to get the total amount. Students had the opportunity to draw pictures and make their own addition number stories.
Inquiry
This term Prep C is completing a Weather unit. Students have been introduced to words and symbols to describe different types of weather. We have also discussed how the weather can effect our choices of clothing and activities. The children drew pictures of a particular type of weather and included what they might wear and what they might be doing on a day like that.
National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual Australian event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) that encourages everyone to read the same Australian picture book at the same time. In 2025, the chosen book was "The Truck Cat" by Deborah Frenkel. The event took place on Wednesday, May 21st, at 12 pm, and was a fun, collaborative way to promote reading and literacy.
The Preps enjoyed the experience with their Grade 6 buddies. After the story, the author spoke to the children about her inspiration for the story and the illustrator gave some tips on how to draw Tinka the cat. The students then had an opportunity to have a go at drawing their own characters from the story.
Thank you Ms Zanatta for organising this event for us!
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
