Year 5
Maths
Our Grade 5 students have been learning about fractions, including converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They have been working hard to apply their knowledge by using their multiplication and division facts to solve problems. To further their understanding of fractions, we have begun explicit instruction on decimals. Students are learning about the relationships between fractions and decimals, and how to place tenths, hundredths, and thousandths on a number line.
Well done to some of our Grade 5 students for helping to teach their classmates about fractions and sharing their knowledge!
Literacy
Our Year 5 and 6 students are in the final weeks of their Community and Social Health unit, part of our knowledge rich curriculum. Throughout this unit, they have explored important topics such as conservation, sustainability, e-waste, pollution, and environmental health. Students have been engaging with informative articles on each topic and strengthening their understanding by answering comprehension questions related to key vocabulary.
In writing, students have been using parentheses to add factual information about a noun or noun phrase in their sentences. Students have been linking their sentences to show their knowledge of comunity, environmental and social health.
Once this unit is finished we will start our literacy unit on Civics and Citizenships were we will learn all about Australias government system.
Well done to our brilliant senior students for their performances in Sacred Heart’s Got Talent! We are truly blessed to have so many talented students at Sacred Heart who show the confidence and courage to perform in front of their peers.
Year 6
Maths-In Maths, our Year 5 students have been exploring the concept of chance by learning to define it as the likelihood of an event occurring. They have been placing events on a probability scale using descriptive labels such as "likely" or "unlikely," and extending this understanding by using decimals from 0 to 1 and percentages to represent the probability of various outcomes.
Confirmation Retreat
On Tuesday, the Grade 6s had a retreat day in preparation for Confirmation. We started off the day with a station about the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit, outlining their meanings and explaining them in simple terms. Afterwards, we went to the STEM room to meet Bishop Tony. He asked us questions about our saints and told us all about the Confirmation process. For lunch, we got to make our own burgers or falafel and enjoy them with our friends. After recess, we went to the beach to do some calming meditation and think about how lucky we are to live where we live. On the walk back up to school, we got icy poles, ending our day on a high.

School Chicks
Over the past two weeks, we’ve been fortunate to visit the school chicks, thanks to the Junior School for organising them as part of their topic unit. We have loved visiting the chickens and watching them grow.
