Supporting Positive Language Around Mental Health in Year 7

We are currently placing a strong focus across the Year 7 cohort on the language students use when talking about mental health.Mental health is an important issue, particularly for young people, and we have been made aware of some concerning instances where students have used throwaway comments, including suggestions for others to harm themselves. While these may not be intended seriously, such language can have significant and lasting impacts. As a school, we take these matters very seriously. Any such comments will be followed up in line with our school behaviour model. More importantly, we are also taking proactive steps to educate and support students in understanding the seriousness of this issue.Over the coming weeks, we will be:

  • Running targeted educational activities in form group time

  • Holding a whole Year 7 assembly in Week 7 to address this topic

  • Supporting SRC initiatives, including a free dress fundraiser for “Do It For Dolly Day” on the last day of term, to raise awareness around kindness and mental health

We encourage you to continue these important conversations at home. Below are some helpful resources you may wish to explore with your child:

Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering a safe, respectful and supportive environment for all students.

Absences

As winter hits the number of absences due to illness has begun to increase. We would like to thank all parents who have promptly notified the school of an absence, it makes our job so much easier. A reminder that absences can be recorded by contacting the absence hotline - 53 817 200, via SEQTA engage or by direct messaging your child’s form group teacher.

Diaries

Students are reminded they need to be taking their diaries to EVERY class. These are for students to remain organised by writing in homework, assessment task due dates, important reminders and also used to sign out if a student needs to leave class (toilet break, locker etc).

Check Your Direct Messages!

It’s important that students are checking their direct messages via seQta. There is a lot of information sent out via direct message, particularly around sporting opportunities. In order to participate in these great opportunities, please remind students to check their messages.

Curriculum Day/King’s Birthday Public Holiday

This Friday and Monday we have a curriculum day for staff and the King’s Birthday public holiday. Students can enjoy this mini break, and we look forward to seeing them return to school on Tuesday refreshed and ready to finish off the last 3 weeks of term.

Class Spotlight – 7B Music

In music, 7B are learning how to use graphic notation to plan how they will use the elements of music to convey ideas and emotions in their group compositions.
