All About Retrieval Practice
At our school, we’re committed to helping students truly understand what they’re learning. One key strategy we use to support deeper learning is called retrieval practice.
Retrieval practice is a learning strategy where students actively recall information from memory, rather than simply reviewing notes or materials. This process helps strengthen their understanding and builds stronger mental connections, making it easier to remember and apply knowledge in the future.
Research shows that when students retrieve information from memory, they’re reinforcing neural pathways in the brain. This makes learning stick and helps students apply what they know in new situations.
In our classrooms, we are engaging in retrieval practice through daily review tasks at the start of lessons, show-me boards, probing questions in group discussions, multiple choice questions and exit tickets.
Retrieval practice helps our students learn how to think, make connections between ideas, and build confidence in what they know.
