Year 5 & 6

Around our level

We have had a very busy fortnight in the 5/6 level.

Fifteen of our students attended Somers Camp for ten days. They had a wonderful time and apparently the food was amazing. Aths Day was such a fun day and the weather was perfect. It was so good to see the students having a go and enjoying themselves. The encouragement the students give each other makes you proud to be part of Yarra Road Primary School. Some of our students participated in the District Cross Country. It is a difficult course and we are so proud of the students willing to compete, particularly those who are not used to running. The Year 5 students had a Teddy Bear's Picnic with their Prep buddy. They read a story to their buddy and shared some morning tea whilst wearing their pyjamas. (I’m sure we all wear our PJs when we are on a picnic!) This is a tradition that we have had at Yarra Road for more than 20 years. This year we held the picnic in the gym and there was certainly a buzz of excitement from both the Year 5s and the Preps. Interschool Sport was supposed to get underway, however the weather was not kind to us. Hopefully we will be able to play on Friday against Our Lady’s Ringwood. In between all these activities, the usual learning has still occurred. An activity in which many students had to overcome some nerves was presenting speeches. The majority of students have now presented two speeches to their class. The improvement from reading a speech to delivering a speech using cue cards has been very rewarding to witness.

Some comments from the students:

Aths Day was amazing. My favorite event was shotpot because it was really fun. The whole day was a blast!

Athletics Day was a very fun experience and a very inspiring one that encouraged everyone to keep trying and never give up! We realised that not all the people participating is a professional at sports, instead we cheered everyone on and showed utmost attention when someone was having a go at something they weren't good at. The teachers and volunteers were also extremely supportive and told us what we did wrong and to have another go next time. It was a very exciting day and I hope to have more like it!

I absolutely loved it. I beat my personal best in the long jump of 2.85m to 3.30m. The 200 metre sprint was really close against me and Cruze. He won but at least I got the second quickest time so I got a second ribbon. Then I did very well in the triple jump, jumping 5.80 metres. I came second again.

- Hunter L

House athletics is my favorite part of the year! It's not only fun to play against your friends, it's also such a great way to build friendships, and to build on sportsmanship. Although I was injured and my options were limited, I loved discus! It's so much fun! And I know it will be different in highschool but I hope it will be the same!

The teddy bear picnic was a blast! I had a lot of fun with Ava, we read a story and had lots of snacks. The best part of it was spending time with my buddy, and being all dressed up in pyjamas. The teddy bear picnic was great.

The whole school Athletics Day was really fun because I got to do my favorite thing there. My favorite events were the 100m sprint and 200m sprint. I got 6 ribbons out of eight and I am really proud of myself.

My experience at the Athletics Day was great!  I was afraid to do some activities because I currently have a sprained back but I did my best and that's what matters.

- Levi P

I personally love Athletics Day even though I only won a couple of things. I personally think that it's not about winning or losing, it's about having fun which most of us, if not all of us did! It is actually one of my favorite days of the year.

5/6C

My favourite thing was the obstacle course because it was so much fun. Some things I didn't do because my foot hurt but I still had so much fun.

- Charlee B

Athletics Day is one of my favourite days of the year. It is really fun!

- Noah F

On Tuesday I did athletics and I got three ribbons for three events; first for triple jump, second for the obstacle course and fourth for discus. For triple jump I got 5.87 metres. Triple jump is the activity I am the best at. In my heat for the 100m, I came first but I wasn’t fast enough for the final. For 200m I was third in my heat. I really enjoyed doing Athletics Day with all of my friends.

- Ceira H

I didn't go to Aths Day because I was at Somers Camp but Mrs Haysom said we can write about Somers so I'll do that. At Somers we had to do table host duty which was pretty much if someone puts their hand up you go over and see what they want. It could be something like, ‘Can I have a cup of water or milk?’ or ‘Can you take my plate?’ or something like that. You also eat before everyone else. The pancakes were absolutely amazing! We went on a giant flying fox which was basically a giant zipline, an ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE SWING that when you drop it's like you faint or get knocked out for a second and ES which is Environmental Studies. It was great and Pete was the best teacher there.
