Year 3 & 4

Around our level

Over the last couple of weeks, Year 3 and 4 students have been actively engaged in learning about emotions and respectful relationships as part of their health and wellbeing curriculum. These weekly sessions have been highly valuable as students begin to understand the importance of empathy, emotional regulation, and positive social interactions.

During a recent activity, students explored various emotional responses by identifying how different scenarios might make someone feel. These scenarios included everyday situations, such as being left out of a game, helping a friend who is upset, or receiving praise for good work. Through guided discussion, students learned to label emotions, like happiness, sadness, anger, and embarrassment, and considered how these feelings influence behaviour and relationships.

To deepen their understanding, students then completed an art-based task where they drew illustrations representing characters that embodied specific emotions, or scenes that might elicit a strong emotional response. Some designed their own characters with exaggerated facial expressions and body language to show feelings like excitement or frustration, while others depicted places or scenarios that revealed the emotional impact of kindness, exclusion, or teamwork, displaying how these scenes make them feel. Students utilised colour to help reflect these emotions also.

These creative activities helped students to better recognise emotions in themselves and others, and supported the development of respectful and empathetic interactions with their peers.
