Year 2 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

The students have been continuing to immerse themselves in ‘Living Things and Caring for Country’. They harvested Jerusalem artichokes and then the following week prepared the bed and planted seeds for the older grades to harvest in Summer. They are starting to recognise the interconnectedness of all living things and that they are part of that too!

Maths:

We have been continuing to focus on mental strategies for addition and subtraction including the 10s facts, doubles, related facts and using place value. These strategies will assist in the mental computation of larger numbers. We have been enjoying solving open-ended addition and subtraction problems, using our knowledge of how these two concepts connect and applying it to find missing numbers.

Literacy:

Students continue to develop their knowledge in phonics through long vowel sounds, including ee (teeny green tree), ea (seals at the beach), and ir(dirty shirt), ur (bursting balloon) and er (river monster). In writing, we are continuing to develop note taking skills by reading and identifying the main idea. Students are gathering information about different environments to support writing persuasive texts towards the end of term.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Watch out for a home activity coming this weekend! Students are going to be asked to prepare a presentation to give to the class on how they Care for Country either at home or in their community.

Students will continue looking at the efficient mental strategies for addition and subtraction and apply these solving vertical addition and subtraction algorithms.. We will start measuring and learning about how to estimate a measurement visually.

Reading  groups continue to review consonant and vowel graphemes, and investigate stage 7 long vowel sounds. We will also explore persuasive texts about caring for country in writing.

To reinforce their learning, students could be practising reading at home with their take home readers. Students who are reading other books should also be encouraged to record this reading in their reading diary.
