Learning in Year 2 - Weeks 9 & 10

English

Phonics

Week 9 - Students will focus on reading and spelling words with different graphemes that make the /or/, /ar/ and /s/ sounds. They will explore a range of spelling patterns, including “or,” “aw,” “au,” “ore,” “oar,” “our,” “ar,” and “al,” and learn how to choose the correct spelling for different words. Students will also learn when the letter “c” makes the /s/ sound before “y,” “i,” and “e.” Through reading, spelling, and word study activities, students will continue building their decoding and spelling skills.

Week 10 - Students will focus on reading and spelling words with different graphemes that make the /er/ sound, including “er,” “ir,” “ur,” “ear,” and “or.” They will also explore homophones and practise identifying words with different meanings but the same sound. Students will build fluency and expression by reading and performing dialogues with a partner and will extend their writing skills by learning how to use similes to create more interesting sentences.

Text Study - Fantastic Mr Fox Novel Study

Students will continue reading Fantastic Mr Fox together as a class and develop their comprehension skills by responding to a range of questions about the text. They will also complete a creative “Wanted Poster” activity for the fox, using descriptive language and details from the story. To celebrate finishing the novel, students will enjoy watching the movie adaptation and comparing it to the book.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will develop their understanding of time and calendars. They will practise reading, writing, and modelling o’clock and half-past times on analogue clocks, as well as interpreting time in different forms. Students will also explore the months of the year, seasons, and the features of calendars. Through a range of hands-on activities and games, they will learn to locate important dates, recognise calendar patterns, and use calendars to solve everyday time problems.

Inquiry

Students will explore Dreamtime stories and learn how they share important cultural knowledge for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They will identify the characters, setting, and message within different stories and discuss what the stories teach about people, animals, and the land. Students will then plan and begin creating a 3D diorama inspired by their own Dreamtime stories, including important characters and settings from their narratives.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Students will learn that making assumptions or using stereotypes about others can be unfair and does not help us understand who a person really is. They will discuss the importance of treating others fairly and respectfully and reflect on ways they can show respect in everyday situations. Students will also reflect on their Respect Rangers journey throughout the term and celebrate their achievements as they become Master Respect Rangers.
