Our Learning - Weeks 7 & 8

The Outcomes are based on the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). The VEYLDF is a curriculum framework designed for early childhood education in Victoria, focusing on children birth to eight years.

Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity

Through our current inquiry unit the children have been encouraged to express their thoughts and ideas through a range of different art mediums. In doing so they are reflecting on themselves, their families and friends, as well as experiences they have engaged in.

The children are becoming more familiar with their names in written form and are learning to isolate the first letter of this.

Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world

Each of the classrooms currently has a different focus for the dramatic play area, including a Medical Centre, Outer Space and a Market Place. through their engagement in these areas the children are able to learn more about the world around them, familiarise themselves with how these places may appear and the activities that occur there. The children are able to also take on different roles in their play, which assists them in developing their understanding of how the world works and their position within it.

In alignment with World's Ocean Day, the children have been exploring the impact pollution has on the oceans and the creatures that live there. They have listened to stories that explore this and discussed what actions they can take to reduce this pollution.

Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

The children have been working to strengthen and develop their core muscles, which impacts not only on their ability to engage in physical activities such as walking, running and climbing, but also their ability to engage in fine motor experiences, including drawing and writing. To target this area the children have engaged in drawing, puzzles and manipulative experiences while lying on their tummies; propelled themselves along the floorwith the hands and feet while lying on wheely boards; and supported themselves on balance boards.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners

As an extension of their early learning about number, which focussed on numbers from 0-5, the children are now focussing on numbers up to 10 as they connect number names, numerals and quantities, understand one-to-one correspondance and understand that, for a set of objects, the number name of the last number counted describes the quantity of the whole set.

Through the children's building with pipes, where the children have been enjoying making ball runs, they have engaed in a process of trial and error, and problem solving as they have discovered how to line the pipes up, use supports to create angles for greater speed and make catchments at the end of the run.

Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators

As they explore how they can expres their ideas through thier artwork, the children have also looked at a range of artwork and illustrations and considered what story is being told through these. In doing so, they are learning to put their impressions of the works into words and to also listen to the ideas of their peers, sometimes building upon these, sometimes offering very different views; accepting these just the same.
