Year 12 Biology - Melbourne Zoo
Last week, our Year 12 Biology students visited Melbourne Zoo as part of their Unit 4 Biology studies.
Students explored the evolution of humans by analysing, comparing and contrasting living primates. Through their observations, they investigated our closest living and extinct relatives, identified evolutionary trends and considered what it means to be classified as Homo sapiens.
The excursion gave students the opportunity to take concepts they have been learning in the classroom and apply them to real-world examples, directly supporting their learning in Unit 4, Outcome 2.
Year 11 Biology – Gene Editing at Casey Tech
Our Year 11 Biology students visited Casey Tech to explore the exciting world of gene editing and biotechnology.
Students investigated how the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system could potentially be used to treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder caused by changes to the dystrophin gene.
During the program, students performed a simulated gene-editing procedure and gained hands-on experience with laboratory techniques including micropipetting and gel electrophoresis.
They then analysed their results to investigate the outcomes of the gene-editing process.
The experience provided students with the opportunity to use biotechnology techniques beyond the classroom and see how the concepts they are studying can be applied to real-world medical research.
The program directly supports their learning in Unit 2, Areas of Study 1 and 3.
