The Wonder of Books in Foundation

Last week, we celebrated Book Week with the wonderful theme, ‘Symphony of Stories.’

Our Foundation students embraced the celebration with great enthusiasm, particularly on Friday when they came to school dressed as their favourite book characters. It was wonderful to see their creativity and excitement as they shared their characters and stories with one another.

Our Junior School students met with Adelaide author Mike Lucas, who has written many much-loved picture books. During his engaging presentation, the Foundation students listened as Mike read his book Let’s Build a House. They especially enjoyed being involved in the story, with some students having the opportunity to construct a tower using foam bricks.

Our Foundation students have many opportunities to develop a love of reading and experience the wonder of picture books. Each week, students borrow a library book to take home and share with their families. In the classroom, teachers revisit favourite picture books, encouraging students to explore the different parts of a story, make connections and discover new vocabulary.

Students participate in small-group reading sessions, reading decodable books to develop their decoding, fluency and confidence. On Fridays, we welcome parents into our classrooms to share picture books with their child or a small group, creating a wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy the wonder of reading together.

Thank you to our families for supporting and encouraging reading at home.

Keep on reading every day!

Junior School Book Week Highlights

We had a wonderful Book Week here at SP!

Our week started with visiting author Mike Lucas speaking to classes from Foundation to Year 9. He gave many tips on writing - the most important being 'never give up!' and our students had a wonderful time listening to him read.

Our 'Look and Find' competition was a big hit with approximately 515 students finding a hidden object and returning it to the library for a lucky dip prize. It was lovely to see some students who do not often come into the library, and hopefully, we gave a good impression of how much fun the library can be!

Our week finished with our dress-up day and parade, and there were many creative costumes on display. We hope our students enjoyed Book Week 2026 as much as we did!
