Sun Protection Policy – 'No Hat, No Play' Reminder
As the weather warms up, please remember that students must wear a broad-brimmed hat for all outdoor activities during Term 4 and until the 30th April.
Hats should:
- Provide coverage for the face, neck, and ears.
- Be in the style of a broad-brimmed, legionnaire, or bucket hat (Baseball caps and visors do not meet the sun protection requirements).
Students without a suitable hat will be required to remain in shaded or sun-safe areas during outdoor activities.
Need a new hat? They are available for purchase at the school office, or from our uniform provider, DCS
Please remember to clearly label all items with your child’s name.

I Believe In Us Day - Casual Dress - Wednesday 15th October
This year, our special day is changing from I Believe in Me Day to I Believe in Us Day. It’s still about believing in yourself, but now it’s also about celebrating how we are part of a kind, caring school community.
Students are invited to wear casual clothes on this day - clothes that make them feel happy and proud. We ask families to bring a gold coin donation to support a children's charity called 'Variety'.
Believing in us means knowing that everyone’s strengths and talents make our school a better place. When we work together, we learn to be kind, helpful, and proud of each other. I Believe in Us Day is about celebrating who we are and the wonderful community we belong to. Together, we can make our school bright, welcoming, and full of kindness.
Classrooms will be participating in learning activities that focus on being part of a kind, caring school community. We will also be having a whole school dance and sing along to the song 'My Own Superhero' at the end of the day,
Thank you for your ongoing support and for joining us in celebrating kindness—both big and small—across our school community.
Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season
Grass pollen season, which typically runs from October to December each year in Victoria, brings an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms. It also increases the risk of thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.
Newport Lakes will implement a range of measures to keep our school community safe as the risk of thunderstorm asthma increases.
Many of our staff are trained in asthma first aid. We will monitor the VicEmergency app to receive thunderstorm warnings and, where appropriate, keep students indoors when weather forecasts identify greater risk.
During the season, there are some things you can do to prepare and protect yourself and your family:
- If your child has ever had asthma, talk to your doctor about what you can do to help protect them from the risk of thunderstorm asthma this pollen season, including updating your asthma action plan. Taking an asthma preventer properly and regularly is key to preventing asthma, including thunderstorm asthma.
- If your child has hay fever, see your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever treatment plan and check if you should have an asthma reliever puffer. These are available from a pharmacy without a prescription.
- If your child has hay fever and experiences wheezing and coughing, it is important to make sure they don’t also have asthma. Speak to your doctor about an asthma action plan.
- Where possible, avoid being outside during thunderstorms from October to December, especially during the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it to ‘recirculate’.
Protect yourself this pollen season – managing asthma and allergies matters.

I Am Malala - Book Drive
Currently, our Year 5/6 students are reading the Young Readers edition of 'I Am Malala'.
As part of this learning experience, families at Newport Lakes Primary School have the opportunity to support the Malala Fund - an organisation dedicated to ensuring every girl has the chance to learn and shape her own future.
To contribute to this inspiring cause, we are offering all families of all year levels the opportunity to purchase copies of the adult edition of 'I Am Malala' from the school at a very low price of $5.00 per book. All money raised from book sales will be donated directly to the Malala Fund.
Order your books via CompassTix - HERE
Donations/orders will close on Friday 31st October 2025, unless supply is exhausted beforehand.
Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani female education activist, and producer of film and television. She is the youngest Nobel Prize laureate in history, receiving the prize in 2014 at age 17, and is the second Pakistani and the only Pashtun to receive a Nobel Prize. Her book 'I am Malala' is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.
