Year 5/6

We would like to thank our students and their families for an amazing Term 3.  We are so proud of the effort that out Year 5 and 6 students are putting in each and every day.  We have a really busy Term 4 as we prepare for Howqua Camp in Week 3. The Musical, Graduation and Transition will follow as we end the year.

English

We have finalised our class novel Tom Appleby - Convict Boy and have moved into a writing unit on biographies where the students researched, drafted and published a piece of writing about a famous inventor and their creation.  They needed to synthesise information online and arrange it into the subheadings of early life, education, invention and impact/legacy. Next term we beginning a new novel study next term on 'The Last Bear', which investigates the themes of sustainability and conservation.

Maths

This week we have been learning about chance and probability to complete our numeracy work in Term 3. We recently finalised out unit on Measurement by completing our learning sequence on time. Our Year 5/6 students looked at the relationship between analog and digital time, elapsed time and conversion between 12 and 24 hour time.  Many of our students engaged in a project where they planned a trip around Australia to visit the "big" landmarks. They needed to calculate distances, costs and track time when creating an itinerary.

Humanities

To end Humanities this term, our 5/6 students have been exploring the world of digital technologies by creating and designing their own apps to solve real-life problems. They have been learning how to think like designers, considering key design elements such as layout, accessibility, and user experience. Using flow charts, students mapped out how their app will work and clearly outlined the problem it aims to solve. It has been exciting to see their creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking come to life in this project!

We begin Term 4 in Humanities with our Health unit, where students will be learning about health, wellbeing, and puberty. This important unit helps students build their understanding of the changes they may experience and how to look after themselves during this stage of life. More detailed information will be shared with families via Compass soon.

Cricket Success!

Congratulations to our 5/6 cricket team who won the mixed/boys competition on the last ball to beat Anglesea PS at Ellimatta Reserve last week. Well done too all our champions and for their parents who made the effort to get them there.

Veggie Garden

Over the course of the year, our Year 5/6 students and the wonderful Ms Kelly have been instrumental in rejuvenating the garden beds and veggie patch. We have received grants from Bunnings and Hesse Rural Health to buy new equipment as well as plants and soil to replant the beds as well as a new shed.
