STEM

Wow! What a term it has been in the STEM room!

Thank you for your ongoing donations of recycled materials. For now, I would like to kindly request a pause while I stocktake and reassemble the STEM room before I put a call out for our next adventure in STEM.

Prep

This week we completed our fairytale lands, compiling our designs and our models to see all that we have achieved across the term. Students were able to see their completed lands and observe each other's, choosing their personal favourite and reflecting on what their favourite week was. Students have gained a lot of skill in getting themselves out of the "Learning Pit", looking to their peers for help, observing their strategies and then seeking help if needed.

Year 1/2

Students have spent the last fortnight planning and creating a Moriac Community Helper, in the form or either a bird feeder or a bug hotel. Students selected their own materials, sourcing natural items from our yard and recycled materials from our STEM room. Following their design, students worked hard to problem solve the task. Some bottles were hard to cut through, others had to redesign when the idea of bird seed emptying out came to mind, whilst persisting with filling every gap in the bug hotels took time and dedication. I hope these have all come home and students have hoisted their bird feeders into a tree and filled them up with seed or popped their bug hotel in a shady and sheltered spot in the garden. Many students also contributed to our MPS garden MEGA bug hotel which will be placed next term in a bug friendly spot.

Year 3/4

This term reached its peak with students showcasing their completed Miniature mini golf courses. They hosted other classes and were able to show off their incredible hard work from the term. It was a joy watching students speak confidently about the obstacles, surfaces and putters they designed, sourced and created across many weeks. Although there were some repairs made before, during and after it was worth it to have dozens of plays on each course. I hope these have come home and are getting many more plays!

Year 5/6

This term culminated with students hosting other classes in a carnival style event. Students shared their games, scoring and rewarding winners on their efforts playing the game they designed, sourced and created across many weeks. I hope these have come home and are getting many more plays! These games can also be seen on Seesaw along with the students group reflection, identifying the challenges and the features of the game they created.

Have a great break and see you in Term 4!
