More Art Making and Exhibiting Success

Maylinn O’Connor (Year 12 2023) is a finalist in the Museum of Australian Photography’s TOPshots. Maylinn's work was selected from the series she explored in Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting, titled ‘Xin’.

Blurring the line between Anglocentric and traditional East Asian cultures, my series captures the clash of dual identities and sacrifice. Paying homage to my mother, my works tell her complicated story through split-second moments. I explore her struggle to raise her children in Australia, moving away from her home and life in Shanghai.

You can read more about Maylinn’s entry and see the series of artworks here.

TOPshots is an annual celebration of emerging photo-media artists selected from a large pool of entries. 2024 marks the 16th anniversary of this award and exhibition, which showcases exceptional photographic work produced by students who have completed VCE subjects of Art Making and Exhibiting, Art Creative Practice and Media, as well as the International Baccalaureate and VET Visual Arts subjects.

The works are on display until 24 June in the Atrium Gallery at the museum in Wheeler's Hill.
