Melbourne Zoo excursion

Across Term One, Year 5 students learned all about animal adaptations. Adaptations are when an animal adapts to their own environment to survive. We investigated different animals and whether they have physical, behavioural and life cycle adaptations.

We also researched a range of different environments and the impact they have on how animals survive, for example: rainforests, deserts, coastal and semi-arid environments. To conclude our studies, we visited the Melbourne Zoo, where we participated in a curriculum aligned learning experience.

During our session with a range of Zoo Keepers, we learnt the purpose of bones, by looking at some fossils and even had the opportunity to touch them. After that, we explored the Zoo and took notes on all the adaptations we were able to identify, further categorising them and providing examples. The Zoo was a great resource to see what we were learning about in real life. Not only was it an educational experience, it was also super fun!!!
