Student Well-being
Year 5/6 Community
This term, students in the Year 5/6 community have been learning about Wellbeing through their Inquiry Unit, ‘Our Big Brains….How can I grow my brain?’. Students immersed themselves in learning about the brain and pondered how they could grow their brains as learners.
They created posters of what they could do when stuck on tasks. Some even created motivational posters with quotes! Check out their awesome posters below!
Students developed their thinking further through exploring ‘The Learning Pit’ by James Nottingham. They learnt that James Nottingham's Learning Pit is a metaphor for the challenging learning journey. It represents the struggle and discomfort students experience when encountering new concepts or problems.
Students were given tasks such as a research topic or picture prompt with minimal instructions. They completed the tasks and reflected on their learning process using the Learning Pit. Through completing these tasks, we uncovered the main learning dispositions that students commonly displayed - Persistence, Collaboration, Resilience, Curious and Creative. Students were then asked to design emoji/symbols that they thought best represented these learning dispositions.
By the end of the term, the Year 5/6 community would have voted on community-agreed emojis for each learning disposition, which we will continue to refer back to during our learning journey throughout this year!
