Restorative Practices

We all make mistakes. At school, we see mistakes as essential to learning, whether it happens in the yard or in the classroom, with learning, relationships or behaviour. If a student makes a mistake in their learning, we sit with them, reteach, and help to build understanding. That same thinking guides how we approach behaviour. We’re not looking to blame or embarrass learners for making mistakes, but facilitate a better understanding and work out a better way forward.

Just this week a couple of students had a disagreement that escalated quickly. Rather than leading with punishment, we bought them together for a retorative chat. They each shared their perspective, listened to each other and came up with their own steps to resolve and repair the situation. They both walked away feeling heard and valued with a better understanding of themselves and each other.

Moments like this remind us that learning happens beyond the classroom and academics. When our learners are supported to reflect and repair, they build skills that help them to grow into thoughtful, respectful community members.

Happiness & Gratitude

Overview of this edition.

Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

This edition has many articles and videos to support understanding around happiness and gratitude, led by experts in this field. Short clips like “Does positive education increase academic outcomes?”, “What are some of the health benefits associated with happiness?”, “What can parents do to improve happiness in their child’s life as well as their own?” are great, short pieces of information for parents.

Attendance

We are still so impressed with our whole school attendance stats. Each week from week 1, our attendance for Term 4 has increased, giving us an average this term so far of around 92%.

With the end of the year fast approaching, and 6 weeks holidays not far away, it is important to be at school each and every day to improve subject knowledge and continue to develop peer relationships.

Our goal is over 95%, please support your children and our school as a whole with this.
