In week 5, Kuta-kaya students Beau Morrow, Eru Andrews-Luis, Noah Christie and Alex Wallace-Lalas attended the NSW School Sport, Ten Pin Bowling Competition at Dullboys Rutherford. The team played two games, and their bowling skills were tested against other regional Highschool Support Unit teams. The competition was a day promoting disabilities and inclusion in sport. The team finished 2nd in the Maitland Zone, overall, in the Hunter Zone they finished 6 out of 35 schools. Fabulous efforts from the team!

A group of Year 11 and 10 students participated in an excursion hosted by the Education Pathways Program with other schools in the Upper Hunter region. Students explored the behind-the-scenes operations at Hunter Valley Gardens, Mercure Accommodation and Roche Estate. Industry roles such as landscaping, maintenance, hospitality, event management and ride operations were explored with the presenters.
To finish off our immersive experience, our students were gifted a game of Putt Putt and Aqua Golf. We are looking forward to potential work experience in the tourism industry at the Hunter Valley Gardens moving forward.

The Kawul class recently visited the Maitland Levee as part of their Geography studies on landscapes and landforms. Students explored the Hunter River foreshore and observed how the levee is built to protect the town from flooding. They examined natural landforms such as the river channel, riverbanks, and surrounding floodplain, then discussed how human structures like levees change the way these landforms interact with water. This experience helped students understand both the natural processes that shape the landscape and the management strategies used to keep communities safe.

As part of Kuta Kaya’s fundraising project, Kawul also walked to the Kurri Kurri Return and Earn depot to recycle cans collected by Marin. This activity gave students the chance to apply financial maths skills by counting the number of containers, calculating the refund at 10 cents each, and working out the total funds raised. The excursion not only supported their fundraising goal but also highlighted the importance of recycling, sustainability, and using maths in real-life situations to make informed decisions.

A group of students in Kuta-Kaya have been participating in the Work Crew program in which they engage in hand-on gardening and maintenance activities to beautify the Kuta-Kaya yard space. This has included activities such as weeding, trimming, pruning, planting, removing rubbish, planning for murals and budget management. So far, the Work Crew has refurbished the horseshoe garden and two interior gardens, cleaned up the garden shed, and created a barrier to stop handballs going under the building.
During Term 3, Marin class have been visiting iGym Kurri. Students have been participating in a range of fitness tasks to improve and evaluate their level of fitness. They have loved exploring the facility and engaging in cardio and strength training.
