Building Automatic Recall with Times Tables Rock Stars

At St Kilda Park, we’re continuing to strengthen our focus on building strong foundations in number fluency. A key part of this is helping students develop automatic recall of multiplication facts — their times tables.

Every student from Year 2 upwards has their own login for Times Tables Rock Stars, an engaging online program that helps students practise and master their multiplication and division facts through short, timed games and adaptive challenges. The program cleverly adjusts to each child’s current level of fluency, providing extra practice where needed and rewarding accuracy and speed as confidence grows. Students can compete against themselves, classmates, or even players around the world in safe, moderated online challenges — all while having fun and building essential number skills.

Why Times Tables Matter

Instant recall of multiplication facts is one of the most important building blocks for success in mathematics. When students know their tables automatically, they can focus their thinking on solving more complex problems, reasoning, and applying mathematical concepts rather than spending time working out basic facts.

The Victorian Curriculum expects that all students will know their times tables up to 10 × 10 by the end of Year 4, and research consistently shows that regular, focused practice is the most effective way to reach this goal.

How Families Can Help

  • Encourage your child to log in and practise for a few minutes each day — little and often makes the biggest difference.
  • Celebrate progress and personal bests — the program tracks improvement over time.
  • Reinforce multiplication in real-life contexts: skip-counting in the car, sharing items equally, or using flashcards together at home.

Developing strong number fluency takes time and consistent practice, and Times Tables Rock Stars is a great way to make that practice enjoyable and motivating.
