Year 5 Incursion

Last Thursday, we had a science incursion about electricity where we got to try lots of experiments. My classmates and I experienced a moment we'll never forget. Our first experiment was easy. We needed to make a mini light bulb glow by using two small batteries. At first, none of us knew what to do, but our instructor guided us step by step. It was breathtaking to watch her demonstrate how one simple battery could bring such a tiny object to life.

After the demonstration, we split into pairs. My partner and I received our light bulb and our first two batteries. We cautiously connected the wires to the battery, and with a shared gasp of excitement, a bright light flared like the sun on a hot summer day.

Our next activity was similar, but this time we were working with a mini fan. Our instructor showed us the motor that powered the fan. I was amazed at how they could make such small parts fit into those tiny motors. Just like with the light bulb, we connected the wires to the batteries, and the fan started to spin, but the breeze was only blowing on me. My partner wanted to feel the cold air too, so we thought of a solution. We switched the wires, connecting them diagonally, and the motor started spinning the other way around! The cool breeze was now blowing directly towards my partner.

For our final experiment, we got to create our own invention. My partner and I grabbed two connectors, but when we tried to put them together, nothing happened. We quickly remembered we needed a battery and an object to power it. So we grabbed a plastic yellow circle, a motor, and a switch, then added the battery to our wonderful creation. Abruptly, we heard a whooshing sound. "Is that ours?" we thought. Then we saw it, a yellow plastic circle flying up, up, and into the air. Our invention worked! It was so much fun, I'd definitely do it again!

On Thursday, all the Year 5s had a science incursion from Super Charged. We made different circuits with lights and fans. When we were all on the floor in a group we learnt that people can be circuits as well. So we all stood in a big circle and held hands. When we held hands a tube lit up because of the energy in our body but if you let go the tube will turn off because it is like the circuit breaks. We all learnt a lot and had lots of fun!
