Year 4/5/6

Over the past two weeks, our class has been busy exploring some exciting learning across Mathematics, Art, and Geography.
Mathematics
In Maths, we have been working on our measurement unit: What needs to be measured determines the unit of measurement.
Students have been learning how to select and use the most appropriate units to measure and compare length and mass. Using everyday objects from around the classroom and from the staff pantry, students have estimated, measured and converted between units such as grams and kilograms. We have also explored fractions and decimals within measurement. Students have then extended this further to calculate perimeters and solve problems involving different units of measurement.
This learning links directly to NSW Mathematics syllabus outcomes, including:
- MA2-NSM-01 (estimates, measures and compares masses of objects using kilograms and grams),
- MA3-GM-02 (selects and uses the appropriate unit and device to measure lengths and distances), and
- MA3-RN-03 (determines percentages of quantities, and finds equivalent fractions and decimals).
Art
For Father’s Day, students took the lead in designing creative and practical gifts. Together we made wooden coasters by printing a photo, placing it face-down on the wood, gently wetting and then rubbing away the paper, transferring the image to the wood before sealing with a special glue. Another inventive pair of students created the unique idea of back scratchers using deer antlers. These projects highlighted the creativity, problem-solving and collaboration skills of our learners.
Geography
In Geography, we have begun our unit: Managing the Environment.
Students are investigating how people can manage natural resources responsibly for a sustainable future. To connect their learning with practical action, students have started constructing solar ovens. This hands-on project allows them to explore renewable energy in real life, linking to our studies of sustainability, custodial responsibility, and renewable versus non-renewable energy. Our solar oven will be used to dehydrate some vegetables from the school kitchen garden … when the sun comes out!
Our work aligns with NSW Geography syllabus outcomes, such as:
- GE2-3 (examines differing perceptions about the management of places and environments), and
GE3-3 (evaluates the impact of human activities on places and environments and proposes ways people can respond).
Our class has really enjoyed the mix of practical, hands-on projects and deep thinking over the past fortnight, and we look forward to sharing more of our learning soon.
