What is Diwali?

In light of Diwali being celebrated this week (pardon the pun), we asked some of our Year 8 students to share their knowledge and experience of celebrating this festival!

Below is an article written by Pratham, Ayush, Jaskaran, Robin and Rishi of Year 8

Diwali is the time of year when the sky is lit with the embers of fireworks and the happiness of millions. With each lamp lit, the faces of people light up with joy. This festival symbolises light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Also known as the Festival of Lights, it earns its name from the countless diya lamps that brighten homes and hearts. It is a celebration of courage, devotion, and the eternal victory of good over evil.

The celebration holds different meanings across religions, but its core message remains the same. In Hinduism, it commemorates Lord Ram’s victory over the demon Ravana and is also linked to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, symbolising wealth and prosperity. For Sikhs, it  marks the release of Guru Hargobind Ji along with 52 kings from imprisonment. No matter the tradition, the occasion stands as a powerful reminder of the victory of good over evil and the light that guides us through darkness.

Beyond the lights and celebrations, Diwali is a powerful reminder of new beginnings. It’s a time when families and communities come together to leave behind old conflicts, heal relationships, and embrace hope for the future. Cleaning the house isn’t just about cleanliness, it symbolises sweeping away negativity and making room for positivity and growth. In this way, Diwali encourages everyone to start fresh, united by shared traditions and the belief that light will always conquer darkness.

In Australia, the country of diversity, Diwali is celebrated around the nation, in unity. From family time to fireworks, Diwali is a time of the year that is expressed by households, supermarkets such as Coles, and even communities through events. The festival is when the community comes together and celebrates with beautiful firework shows, traditional but graceful dances, irresistible Indian cuisine and a breathtaking light-show.

When all these elements combine, Diwali is a memorable celebration every year and is a reminder of the good in the world. No matter who you are, you can have fun during Diwali.

Happy Diwali!

To me, Diwali is the most joyful time of the year, a perfect blend of sweets, savouries, fireworks, family, and friends. Here are a few moments from my Diwali celebrations!-Pratham
