Middle School Subject Expo

On the 24th of June, representatives from each senior school subject had the opportunity to aid year 9 and 10 students with their subject selection. Several student-led stalls were set up in the library and Year 12 students were encouraged to bring in some material from their respective subjects; giving prospective students a glimpse into VCE and VM schooling and what material they can expect to cover. The Middle School Subject Expo was a great success with many students interacting positively and engaging meticulously with their peers, which achieved the ultimate aim of this event - providing students with informed, experienced support through seniors who are currently participating in their areas of interest. It was great to see all the Year 12's competing with one another, decking out their stalls in different equipment from their respective study whilst attempting to comedically convince their younger counterparts to consider their subject. Additionally, the responsibilities of representing a chosen area of study forced an increase in engagement between both parties, resulting in greater interpersonal skills and communicative mentoring. Overall, the event was one to remember and we do hope that all those who attended genuinely consider all the subjects on display irrespective of future career pathways. - Hasan, Year 12

Getting the opportunity to be involved and represent Food Studies alongside Maddi for the Middle School Subject Expo was a privilege and a great chance to develop my leadership skills. Being able to talk to year 9 and 10 students that are curious about Food Studies gave me the opportunity to organise workshops containing visuals and examples of past work, collaborate with others and delegate tasks between Maddi and I. As a result, leaving peers with informative support of what Food Studies consists of.  - Emma,  Year 12

On the 24th of June 2024, middle school students participated in The Middle School Subject Expo, which showcased all VCE subjects available at Cheltenham Secondary College through displays created by Year 12 students. The event provided Year 9 and Year 10 students with the opportunity to explore these subjects as they prepare for their 2025 subject selections. The displays featured a range of materials, including interactive posters, project samples and informational brochures, all meticulously collated by the senior students. The expo aimed to help year 9 and 10 students gain a more realistic view of what each subject would include in their future years of study. This event provided an excellent opportunity for senior students like me to develop and demonstrate our leadership skills. - Alice, Year 12

The Subject Expo helped me find out about a range of subjects in depth. After learning more about Psychology from the Year 12 students, I am now questioning my subject choices for next year as it wasn’t what I expected. Health is a subject that interests me as I am considering being a dietician when I leave school and Health links in nicely. - Jessica, Year 10

I am interested in taking the VM course next year. At the Subject Expo I learnt that you are able to select one subject (outside of the standard VM program) to study as part of the course. My next step is investigating whether its possible to study Physics as part of VM. - Harry, Year 10

The Psychology booth at the Subject Expo was particularly interesting, with cool optical illusions and interesting information. I am now considering doing Psychology as a subject in the future. - Charlotte, Year 9

The Subject Expo gave us a clear description of the VCE subjects we will be able to choose from. It also gave me an understanding of what subjects are required for the job of my choice. I'm looking forward to starting these elective classes in future year levels. - Carla, Year 9

The Middle School Subject Expo was a really helpful event that allowed me to further understand some VCE subjects that I was looking into. It was great talking to the year 12's about the different subjects and their experiences with them. It really helped me focus more on some of the subjects I would enjoy doing in the years to come. - Julian H, Year 10

Year 10 Wood Technology

In Year 10 Wood, students recently completed an exciting project where they designed and built their own bedside tables. This project was not just about constructing a piece of furniture, but also about creativity, problem-solving, and applying the practical skills they’ve learned throughout the year.

The challenge was to take a standard bedside table design and make three significant changes to make it their own. This allowed students to personalise their projects and think critically about design and functionality. Some changes included timber sizes, table height, handle design, drawer and shelf position.
