Mathslympics

& Family Maths Night

Wednesday 07.08.2024

Dear parents/guardians, Wednesday the 7th of August will be a big day for Woodend Primary School and we’re all incredibly excited for the students and families to participate in what we have planned.

Mathslympics

Wednesday the 7th of August - 9.00AM - 3.30PM (Normal School Hours)

Instead of our normal lessons taking place throughout the school day we are planning for all students to participate in our bi-annual Woodend Primary School Mathslympics.

Students will be placed into different groups based on the Sports Houses they are in. The groups have pupils of all ages that will range from our Foundation to Year 6. Students will take part in 8 different activities that go for approximately 25-30 minutes, each will focus on different numeracy concepts. The activities have been designed by our hard-working teachers and can be approached and completed no matter what the level of understanding for the student. The tasks will be hands-on and physical with the aim of promoting the four fundamental numeracy proficiencies of Fluency, Problem Solving, Understanding and Reasoning whilst also promoting engagement in Maths. We can’t wait to see all of our students trying their best in every task.

All students are strongly encouraged to wear their house colours on the day, house points will be awarded throughout the day. If you are unsure of what house your child is in please ask them to check with their classroom teacher.

The House colours are as follows:

  • Chisholm - Djinap = Yellow
  • Dryden - Ngari = Green
  • Ebden - Yulawil = Red
  • Mitchell - Dong Dong = Blue

Family Maths Night

Wednesday the 7th of August - 5.50pm for 6pm start - 7.30pm

Following the Mathslympics parent/guardians and students are encouraged to return to school at 5.50PM for a 6PM start in the Hall for our Family Maths Night.

At our last Family Maths Night in 2022, over 200 parents attended and took away so many valuable ideas and resources, we’d love it if even more families could attend this year. Each Unit will run at least 6 activities that families can participate in together, all family members are encouraged to come. Parents will be asked to go to the hall at the beginning of the night for a 15 minute presentation about Numeracy at Woodend Primary School and how to support your child at home with Maths. You will also receive a handout of valuable resources designed by our teachers and made specifically to assist you with helping your child with Maths at home and practise crucial Numeracy skills in everyday contexts. There will also be a variety of estimation activities where families will have to work together and submit an answer. The closest answers will receive a prize at the conclusion of the event back in the hall.

We can’t wait to see you all there.

Kind regards,

Numeracy Learning Specialist and Year 3 Teacher.
