WPS Community Children’s Garden

Weed (noun): a plant growing where it is not wanted.

This week we learnt all about weeds. In line with permaculture principals, in the Community Children’s Garden, we let some of our food plants flower and seed. This provides food and shelter for insects. We in turn get lots of edible plants sprouting in places we do not want them, such as the gravel paths.

This week we learnt to identify a garlic plant from a weedy grass (and remove the latter), within the veggie beds. We then discovered a world of edible ‘weeds’ growing in the gravel – lots of baby veggies (spinach, rocket, kale, calendula, celery and carrots). What wasn’t eaten, got taken home to be planted. (If you received some of these, put them in a pot in a warm spot inside a sunny window and they might make it through until spring, when they can be planted outside.)
