Auslan
P-2:
Wow—Week 4 already! Our Prep to Year 2 learning community is making remarkable strides in their learning journey. This term, we are continuing our linguistic dive into the Hands, Orientation, Location, Movement, Non-Manual Features (HOLM NMF) framework, which is helping students understand the foundations of Auslan sign language. We’re also exploring flat handshapes in signs, allowing students to experiment with hand positioning and movement as they expand their vocabulary and fluency.
Building on last term’s focus on List Buoys, students will soon be using this skill to show 5-7 signs confidently. This approach encourages not only linguistic growth but also boosts their ability to communicate clearly and accurately through Auslan. We’re so proud of their progress, and we can’t wait to see their confidence continue to grow! Thank you for supporting our budding bilinguals in this exciting journey.
This week for the National Anthem we had 1/2E show off their Auslan talent, they did a fantastic job, well done!
Y7:
In the Year 7 space, we’re racing toward the end of Semester 2, Unit 2, with plenty of enthusiasm before launching into the Flying Start program. We’re finishing up with a fun and creative project called “My Weird Family.” In this task, students will apply their growing knowledge of Auslan, showcasing their skills in List Buoys, Size and Shape Specifiers (SASS), Depicting Signs (DS), and family vocabulary. This unit has been a fantastic journey, and we’re excited to see students put their skills to the test.
The “My Weird Family” assessment, scheduled for Weeks 5 and 6, is designed to challenge students while letting them express their creativity. By describing their imaginary family using Auslan, they’ll have the chance to connect language skills with visual storytelling, fostering their confidence in communication. Thank you for your continued support as they wrap up the semester!
Thank you
