Mitch Coombs Assistant Principal 7-12
It has been a smooth start to Term 4, and as I write that I am amazed to think that we’re already this far into the year!
The Prep students who began in February are now well and truly entrenched in their learnings and doing things that seem unfathomable at the beginning of the year such as reading, writing, counting and many other things.
The same is true of our Year 7 students who have excelled beyond the realms of what they thought was possible, where our Year 12s are now busily preparing for exams – a reality which seemed a very distant future at the start of the year.
As we are nearing the end of the year it is timely to remind everyone about the attendance requirements to achieve an ‘S’ for all subjects. Our requirement is 80% and parents/carers can check this through Compass by clicking on the ‘Attendance’ tab. The percentage which we use is on the extreme right of that page, the school percentage, as indicated in the visual below.
As we move to the end of the academic year, now is the time for families to support their students to improve attendance. If support is required, please contact your student’s classroom teacher or year level coordinator.
As previously mentioned, our Year 12s are finishing up transitioning to the workforce, gap years and into exams in preparation for university pathways. For whichever pathway they are following, we wish them all the best, and even though their time at the school may be over, we always welcome them back to our College for support and future engagement. For those doing exams, this is a very busy time which can cause stress. Please remember that we are there to help, but also that your efforts will undoubtedly be reflected in the results you will receive and your work will be well and truly worth it!
It is also important to note that Flying Start will be very quickly upon us. This is a great opportunity for our secondary students (and those coming in) to get a taster of the next year level and begin their 2025 subjects with their teachers.
This is a great opportunity for all students to have a fresh start and create great habits which will set themselves up for future success. It is important for all students to take this opportunity so if there is any support that parents/carers need to make it a success please contact the respective year level coordinator.
Our end of year activities this year promise to be quite engaging for our Year 7-9 students, with activities such as the Zoo in Melbourne, The Bendigo Discovery Centre and the Whroo forest to name just a few. These events are just further examples of the great opportunities which are offered to our students. We encourage all students to take as many of the opportunities that they can through the school as these really help build lasting memories and relationships which can help define students’ time at school.
Finally, we celebrate the achievements of all within our community, and Grade 3-4 teacher Michael Lindeback. Michael was fortunate enough to represent Australia in the Vinfast Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Michael put in an amazing effort, coming in 34th in his classification (35-39 year olds) with a time of 9:11.14. Not only this, but he was 120th overall – open age (not including professionals). Congratulations Michael, you’re an inspiration to all of us!
To finish off, I hope you all have an amazing end to the 2024 academic year.
Kind regards,
Mitch Coombs
