Student Support

Introducing the Student Support Team

The Student Support Team has recently expanded with three new staff members starting at Mount Beauty Secondary College. These roles compliment the work being managed by and leadership roles already filled by Mitch Harris and Sarah Laidlaw. The Student Support page will be regularly included in the weekly newsletter with health tips, wellbeing news and other important information.

Last week, Tyrone and Leah explained their roles. Last, but not least is Pip to chat about her role in the team.

Pip - Mental Health Practitioner

  • This role contributes to whole school approaches to mental health preservation and promotion.
  • Mental Health Practitioners provide short term counselling and intervention for students with mild to moderate mental health needs and liaise with the relevant internal and external services when students need more intensive support.
  • I'm a Social Worker and I've been working in Mental Health mainly in rural areas, for the last 13 years. Prior to working as a Social Worker, I've worked in a variety of roles including Camp Cook, Farm Hand, and Kitchen Hand.
  • I work at Mount Beauty Secondary College on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I look forward to meeting you all along the way.

The Benefits of Exercise

We all know that exercise is good for our bodies. It helps us become stronger, faster, and compete at a higher level. But did you know exercising regularly can hold many other benefits for us?

We know exercise is good for our body, and it can also have positive impacts on our mental state as well. Engaging in regular exercise can improve your memory, help alleviate stress, give you more energy during the day, and even help you sleep better at night!

Exercising isn’t something that has to be done alone either. You can grab a friend and go for a walk, run, bike ride, swim, or kayak. Find something that works for you, and most importantly, remember to have fun!

Worry

We all go through times when we worry. We might worry about friendships, or what someone might be thinking about us, or how we went in exams.

Here’s a little bit of fun you can have with your mind!

Firstly, get a pen and put it lengthwise in front of you on a desk or a table.

Now, purely with the power of thought only – no cheating 😊!

You can’t blow on the pen, wriggle the desk or table or do anything to move it – just using the power of thought – move it from left to right.

Did it move? Try again …. really, really hard!

I bet it didn’t move.

This is the power of thought.

Thought has no power, other than what we give it

It’s normal to worry, but ask yourself “is worry going to solve the problem?"

Nope!

What we can do, is acknowledge that you are concerned or worried about exam results, or getting into the course you want. Then let the worry slide through your mind. If the worry thought comes back again, just let it slide through your mind again. It’s not worth the time in your mind.

By the way, if you can move the pen with the power of thought – please come and show me! I'm Pip, and I’m at school on Mondays and Tuesdays in the Staff Room or around the school somewhere.
